The Philadelphia Phillies place Brett Myers on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 29 May 2007 at 12:09 am

The Phillies have placed closer Brett Myers on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.  In 21 games (3 starts) this season, Myers is 1-2 with 6 saves, a 5.50 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  In 36 innings, he has allowed 35 hits, 18 walks and he’s whiffed 51 batters.  Myers has been pretty good so far this season out of the bullpen and he will be hard to replace.  Antonio Alfonseca will get the first shot to close until Myers is ready to return.  Alfonseca is 2-1 with 1 save, a 4.57 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP so far this season.  In 21.2 innings he has allowed 27 hits and walked 9 batters while whiffing 9.  Look for Geoff Geary and Ryan Madson to get a shot at closing if Alfonseca falters.

Carlos Carrasco is on the long road to the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 27 May 2007 at 10:45 pm

20 year old righty starter Carlos Carrasco is the #1 prospect of the Philadelphia Phillies according to Baseball America.  Carrasco is pitching in Hi-A ball for the Phillies and he’s started 9 games so far this season.  In those 9 games, Carrasco is 4-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP so far this season.  In 45.2 innings, he has allowed 41 hits, 7 homers, has walked 18 batters and whiffed 33.  Look for the Phillies to be very patient with Carrasco and only promote him if he deserves it.

Jon Lieber has been pitching well since moving into the rotation for the Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 May 2007 at 11:57 pm

Jon Lieber has been one of the best pitchers on the Phillies staff this season.  In 8 games (6 starts), Lieber is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  He has thrown 42 innings this season and he has allowed 39 hits, walked 12 batters and struck out 25.  Lieber’s pitching has helped the Phillies crawl out of their early season funk.  Hopefully, he will keep up the good work.

Antonio Alfonseca has been awful for the Philadelphia Phillies so far

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 May 2007 at 11:52 pm

Antonio Alfonseca has pitched poorly so far this season for the Phillies.  In 20 games this season, Alfonseca is 2-1 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP.  In 19.2 innings, he has allowed 25 hits, walked 9 batters and whiffed 8.  The Phillies need Alfonseca to pitch better because their bullpen is pretty weak right now due to injuries.

The Philadelphia Phillies were outstanding last week

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Weekly Results by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 May 2007 at 11:47 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies rolled to a 5-2 record last week despite getting outscored 33-32!  What that shows is how clutch the Phillies hitting was last week.  The Phillies entered this week with a 22-22 record which has them in 3rd place in the National League East, 6.5 games behind the Mets.

Wes Helms starting to lose playing time for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Monday 21 May 2007 at 10:27 pm

Wes Helms has been cold of late with the bat as he’s only 1 for his last 8 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI in his last 4 games.  The problem for Helms is that Abraham Nunez has got red-hot and the Phillies are riding the hot hand.  The Phillies have been very disappointed in the play of Helms as they gave him a nice contract in the off-season as a free agent.

Chase Utley is catching fire with the bat for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 15 May 2007 at 2:09 pm

With Ryan Howard on the disabled list, the Phillies needed someone to step up and Utley has been that guy.  In his last 6 games, Utley is 8 for 22 (.364 avg, 1.189 OPS) with 8 runs, 2 homers and 7 RBIs.  Many thought that Utley put up the big numbers that he did last season because he was batting in front of Ryan Howard and got to see a lot of fastballs.  But, Utley is proving everyone wrong so far this season as no one is scared to pitch to whoever is batting behind Utley in the lineup.

The Philadelphia Phillies have a so-so week

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Weekly Results by chinmusic on Monday 14 May 2007 at 11:00 am

The Phillies went 3-3 last week as they outscored their opponents 33-23.  The Phillies should have spread their runs out a little bit better so they could have won more games last week.  The Phillies are now 17-20 which is good for 3rd place in the N.L. East, 7 games behind the Braves.
