The Phillies have placed Ryan Howard on the 15-day disabled list with a left quadriceps strain.  Howard was off to an awful start to the 2007 season before the Phillies decided to shut him down.  In 29 games so far, Howard was 20 for 98 (.204 avg., .809 OPS) with 13 runs, 6 homers, 23 RBIs and an amazing 39 whiffs!  The Phillies have brought up Chris Coste to replace Howard on the roster.  Coste has played in 29 games in the minors this season and he was 25 for 100 (.250 avg, .634 OPS) with 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs.  Look for Coste to help out the Phillies quite a bit as he played well for them in 2006.

The Phillies were 3-4 last week as they were outscored 40-34.  The Phillies need to get better pitching or this is going to be a very long season for them.  The Phillies came into this week in 4th place in the National League East with a 14-17 record, 5.5 games behind the Mets and Braves.

John Ennis off to a hot start in AAA for the Philadelphia Phillies

27 year old right handed reliever John Ennis has been lights out in AAA so far this season.  In 10 games, Ennis is 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  In 15.1 innings, Ennis has allowed 13 hits, walked 5 batters and whiffed 16 batters so far in the minors.  Look for Ennis to get a chance soon with the Phillies if he keeps pitching well because they need help in the bullpen.

Adam Eaton is throwing batting practice for the Philadelphia Phillies so far this season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Monday 7 May 2007 at 3:20 pm

Adam Eaton has been absolutely awful so far this season for the Phillies.  In 6 starts this season, Eaton is 3-2 with a 8.18 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP and that will need to improve soon or the Phillies will be in really big trouble this season.  In 33 innings this season, Eaton has allowed 40 hits, 5 homers, hit 3 batters and walked 17 of them.  Those are absolutely horrible numbers, but with Brett Myers now the stopper and all of the money the Phillies invested in Eaton….he will continue to stay in the rotation.  The Phillies can only pray and hope that he gets better.

Geoff Geary solid out of the pen for the Philadelphia Phillies so far this season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 7 May 2007 at 3:11 pm

Geoff Geary has been the best reliever on the Phillies so far this season.  He pitched in 15 games so far this season and he’s 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  In 16 innings so far this season, Geary has only allowed 11 hits while whiffing 12 batters.  If Geary keeps pitching like this he will soon be trusted later in the game.

The Phillies have placed Tom Gordon on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right rotator cuff.  He’s 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP so far this season.  He has saved 5 games this season, but he also has blown three of them.  He has struck out 11 batters in only 9.1 innings which shows that he still has good stuff when healthy.  Brett Myers will take over as the closer of the Phillies.  Myers is 0-2 with 1 save, a 6.20 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP so far thise season.  Myers has whiffed 33 batters in 24.2 innings so far this season which shows that he’s adjusting to his new role in the bullpen.
