The Philadelphia Phillies place Jon Lieber on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 23 June 2007 at 10:46 pm

Just when you think the Phillies pitching situation can’t get any worse, Jon Lieber ruptures a tendon in his right foot.  Lieber will be out until at least September and maybe the remainder of the season.  Lieber pitched in 14 games (12 starts) and he was 3-6 with a 4.73 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  He has thrown 78 innings this season and he allowed 91 hits, walked 22 batters and whiffed 54.  The Phillies will need to make a move for a starting pitcher as they really don’t have anyone in the minors ready to contribute.  The Phillies have recalled Clay Condrey to replace Lieber on the roster.  Condrey has pitched in 12 games this season with the Phillies and he’s 2-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP.  In 15 innings for the Phils this season, Condrey has allowed 22 hits, walked 7 batters and whiffed 10.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign J.C. Romero

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Saturday 23 June 2007 at 12:15 pm

The Phillies have signed lefty reliever J.C. Romero to a minor league contract.  The Phillies will likely use Romero out of their bullpen and if he throws strikes, he will be effective.  In 23 games this season, Romero is 1-0 with 1 save, a 3.15 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP.  Romero pitched 20 innings for the Red Sox this season and he allowed 24 hits, walked 15 batters and whiffed 11.

Pat Burrell has been awful so far this season for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Tuesday 19 June 2007 at 9:03 pm

Pat Burrell has been awful this season and it’s hurting the offense big time.  If Burrell doesn’t pick it up soon at the plate, Ryan Howard might never see a strike this season.  In 68 games this year, Burrell is 41 for 194 (.211 avg, .769 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 8 homers and 29 RBIs.  The Phillies are stuck with Burrell as they don’t have anyone better than him to play left field and they’re paying him a lot of money so he’s almost impossible to move in a trade.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Francisco Rosario on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 18 June 2007 at 10:22 am

The Phillies have placed relief pitcher Francisco Rosario on the 15-day disabled list with a case of right shoulder inflammation.  Rosario has not pitched well so far this season for the Phillies.  In 18 games, Rosario is 0-3 with a 6.64 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP.  He has thrown 20.1 innings and he has allowed 29 hits, walked 11 batters and whiffed 17.  The Phillies have recalled 28 year old righty Brian Sanches to replace Rosario in the bullpen.  Sanches has pitched in 24 games in AAA ball this season and he’s 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP there.  In 30 innings he has allowed 41 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 39.  Sanches threw a shutout inning yesterday for the Phillies in his debut for the season.  Don’t look for Sanches to be much better than Rosario has been this season for the Phillies.

Matt Childers suspended 50 games

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 17 June 2007 at 9:34 am

AAA pitcher Matt Childers has been suspended for 50 games for violating the minor league drug and prevention treatment program.  He has started 7 games in AAA ball and he was 4-1 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  He has pitched 37 innings and he has allowed 45 hits, walked 10 batters and whiffed 26.  Childers screwed himself up pretty good here because the Phillies have had a lot of injuries in their pitching staff and he might have got a call from them at some point.

Ryan Howard is on fire for the Phillies lately

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 12 June 2007 at 4:51 pm

Over his last 7 games, Ryan Howard looks like he’s found his stroke.  In those games, Howard is 10 for 26 (.385 avg, 1.253 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 6 RBIs.  His season average has improved to .245 and his OPS is now .939.  Howard needs to continue hitting well as he makes everyone in the Phillies lineup better when he’s hitting.

The Philadelphia Phillies still not playing well

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Weekly Results by chinmusic on Monday 11 June 2007 at 6:47 pm

The Phillies are 6-7 the last two weeks as they have been outscored 83-54.  The Phillies pitching has been really poor lately and that’s really hurt them as they have been hitting the ball ok.  The Phillies enter this week with a 32-31 record which has them in 3rd place in the National League East, 5 games behind the Mets.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Jose Mesa

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Sunday 10 June 2007 at 10:59 am

The Phillies will give Jose Mesa a chance to revive his major league career.  He’s likely getting this chance because Charlie Manual was a coach when Mesa had his best seasons with the Indians.  Still, Mesa was pretty awful for the Tigers earlier this season.  In 16 games for them, he was 1-1 with a 12.34 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP this season. In 11.2 innings, he allowed 19 hits, walked 6 batters, allowed 3 homers and whiffed 9 batters.  Mesa has done his best work in his career when he’s been written off as done and that appears to be the case right now….so he could surprise.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Freddy Garcia on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 10 June 2007 at 10:51 am

The Phillies have placed Freddy Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.  Garcia has not pitched well so far this season.  In 11 starts, Garcia is 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP this season.  In 58 innings, Garcia has allowed 74 hits, walked 19 batters, whiffed 50 and has allowed an amazingly awful 12 homers.  No news yet on who will replace him in the rotation.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been disappointed with their third basemen

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Tuesday 5 June 2007 at 6:21 pm

The Phillies signed Wes Helms as a free agent to handle thirdbase for them and he has been awful so far this season.  He has played in 46 games this season and he’s 36 for 141 (.255 avg, .617 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 0 homers and 16 RBIs.  If Helms isn’t hitting, he isn’t helping because he’s a poor defensive thirdbaseman.  In fact, Helms has been losing playing time to a couple of other players on the Phillies.  Abraham Nunez is has resurfaced after his horrible first season for the Phillies last year.  He has been playing some third base and he’s been a little bit better than Helms has.  In 42 games this season, he is 29 for 107 (.271 avg, .674 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 0 homers and 10 RBIs.  The Phillies didn’t think much of Greg Dobbs when they signed him but he’s put himself in a great position to earn more playing time.  In 47 games this season he is 27 for 97 (.278 avg, .832 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 5 homers and 22 RBIs.  Look for Dobbs to emerge as the starting thirdbaseman unless Helms finds a groove at the plate soon.
