The Philadelphia Phillies acitvate Chase Utley

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 31 August 2007 at 10:14 am

The Phillies have activated All-Star 2B Chase Utley from the disabled list.  He is having an outstanding season for the Phillies and he will make their offense even better the last month of the season as the Phillies try to chase down the Mets in the National League East.  Utley has played in 103 games this season for the Phillies and he is 140 for 414 (.338 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 81 runs scored, 18 homers and 85 RBIs.  To make room on the roster for Utley the Phillies have designated Russell Branyan for assignment.  That is a shame because Branyan played in 7 games for the Phillies and he was 2 for 9 (.222 avg, 1.111 OPS) but both of his hits were homers and he drove in 5 runs.  Also, with Utley back it pushes Tadahito Iguchi to the bench despite how well he played for the Phillies while Utley was out.  He has played in 31 games this season for the Phillies and he is 37 for 119 (.311 avg, .822 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  If the Phillies were smart they would start Iguchi at third base because he’s a much better baseball player than anyone else they play there.

Pat Burrell is smashing the baseball in the 2nd half of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 4:12 pm

Pat Burrell looked like he was in a trance in the first half of the season but he has been killing the baseball in the 2nd half.  Burrell has played in 37 games in the second half of the season and he is 43 for 120 (.358 avg, 1.017 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 8 homers and 30 RBIs!  Those 2nd half numbers have spiked his season numbers which don’t look so bad right now.  Burrell has played in 118 games this season now and he is 92 for 348 (.264 avg, .897 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 19 homers and 67 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Cole Hamels on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 7:44 am

The Phillies have placed #1 starter Cole Hamels on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow.  This happens at the worst possible time for the Phillies as they are locked in a battle to make the playoffs.  Hamels has started 25 games this season and he is 14-5 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  In 167.1 innings this season Hamels has allowed 150 hits, walked 39 batters and whiffed 156.  The Phillies have activated outfielder Shane Victorino from the disabled list to replace Hamels on the roster.  Victorino has played in 106 games this season for the Phillies and he is 116 for 413 (.281 avg, .774 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 11 homers, 42 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.

The Phildelphia Phillies place a couple pitchers on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2007 at 8:22 am

The Phillies have placed Mike Zagurski (pulled hamstring) and Yoel Hernandez (right shoulder strain) on the 15-day disabled list.  Zagurski has pitched in 25 games this season for the Phillies and he is 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP.  Hernandez has worked in 14 games this season and he is 0-0 with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.  The Phillies have recalled lefty Fabio Castro from AAA to work out of the bullpen.  He was excellent last season as a Rule 5 Pick but he has struggled this season.  In 5 games with the Phillies this season he is 0-0 with a 12.27 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Adam Eaton on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 16 August 2007 at 7:12 pm

The Phillies have placed righty starter Adam Eaton on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.  Eaton has pitched so bad this season that the Phillies are probably glad that he’ll be taking at least a couple of weeks off.  He has started 24 games this season for the Phillies and he is 9-8 with a 6.36 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  In 133 innings this season he has allowed 158 hits, 22 homers, walked 57 batters and whiffed 82.  The Phillies will replace him in the rotation with J.D. Durbin and he has pitched surprisingly well for the Phillies this season.  He has pitched in 10 games (4 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 4-2 with a save, a 4.14 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  One of his starts this season was a complete game shutout.  Lefty Mike Zagurski has been recalled from the minors and he will replace Durbin in the Phillies bullpen.  He has pitched in 23 games for the Phillies this season and he is 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Russell Branyan from the Indians

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Friday 10 August 2007 at 1:02 pm

The Phillies have acquired Russell Branyan from the Cleveland Indians for cold, hard cash.  Branyan played in 61 games this season for the Padres and he was 24 for 122 (.197 avg, .748 OPS) and he scored 16 runs, whacked 7 homers and drove in 19 runs.  Too make room on their roster for Branyan the Phillies have designated Zach Segovia for assignment.  Segovia started 1 game this season for the Phillies and he lost it by pitching 5 innings and allowing 8 hits, 1 walk and whiffing 2 batters.

Joe Thurston is playing well in AAA for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 6 August 2007 at 11:40 am

28 year old lefty swinging 2B Joe Thurston is having a good season in AAA ball for the Phillies.  He has played in 108 games this season for the AAA team and he is 115 for 410 (.280 avg, .750 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 3 homers, 46 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.  Thurston has to be a little bit discouraged that the Phillies traded for Tadahito Iguchi instead of giving him a shot to replace the injured Chase Utley, but, if he finishes the season strong he will likely get called up in September for the stretch run.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Rod Barajas on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 3 August 2007 at 10:10 am

The Phillies have placed catcher Rod Barajas on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.  Barajas has played in 43 games this season and he is 25 for 117 (.214 avg, .719 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 4 homers and 9 RBIs.  Chris Coste will take over as the backup catcher now and he is a much better hitter than Barajas….but he’s not even close to him on defense.  Coste has played in 21 games this season for the Phillies and he is 19 for 52 (.365 avg, .889 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 10 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 1 August 2007 at 2:42 pm

The Phillies have placed both Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn on the 15-day disabled list.  Victorino has a strained right calf which the Phillies hope will only keep him out a couple of weeks.  Victorino has been a pleasant surprise for the Phillies this season with his overall play in right field this season.  He has played in 105 games this season for the Phillies and he is 116 for 409 (.284 avg, .781 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 11 homers, 42 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.  The Phillies also lost Michael Bourn who sprained his left ankle pretty seriously and he will likely be out until September.  He has played in 91 games this season for the Phillies and he is 31 for 109 (.284 avg, .755 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  The Phillies will likely turn to a platoon between Greg Dobbs and Jayson Werth in right field until Victorino is ready to return.  Dobbs would play against the righties and he has been a surprise for the Phillies this season.  He has played in 92 games this season and he is 61 for 212 (.288 avg, .810 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 7 homers and 38 RBIs.  Werth has been injured for part of the season but he will play against the lefties.  He has played in 42 games this season for the Phillies and he is 20 for 85 (.235 avg, .686 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs.  The Phillies have also recalled outfielder Chris Roberson from the minors to help out and he went 4 for 4 with an RBI in his first game last night.  Roberson has played in 105 games this season in AAA ball and he is 115 for 433 (.266 avg, .667 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 4 homers, 43 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Julio Mateo from the Mariners

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Wednesday 1 August 2007 at 8:26 am

The Phillies have traded 26 year old 2B Jesus Merchan for righty reliever Julio Mateo.  The reason the Phillies got Mateo so cheap is because he was banished to the minors early this season after an ugly domestic dispute off of the field.  The 30 year old Mateo has pitched in 9 games this season for the Mariners and he was 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  Mateo worked 12 innings for the Mariners and he allowed 12 hits, walked 5 batters and whiffed 4.  Mateo has been dominant in AAA ball this season as he is 3-1 with 12 saves, a 0.79 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP.  In 34.1 innings in the minors he has allowed only 25 hits, walked 2 batters and whiffed 29.  With Ryan Madson injured the Phillies needed some help at the back of the bullpen and Mateo will immediately be called up when he arrives in Philly.  Mateo has pitched in 219 games (1 start) this season and he is 18-12 with 2 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  In 318.1 innings he has allowed 298 hits, walked 85 batters and whiffed 216.

Jesus Merchan played in 84 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he was 96 for 289 (.332 avg, .896 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 8 homers, 46 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.  The Mariners will likely call him up in September when rosters expand.
