The Philadelphia Phillies claim Shane Youman off waivers from the Pirates

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Friday 30 November 2007 at 11:52 pm

The Phillies have claimed 28 year old lefty starting pitcher Shane Youman off waivers from the Pirates. Youman pitched in 16 games (8 starts) last season for the Pirates and he was 3-5 with a 5.97 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. He has now pitched in 21 games (11 starts) in his major league career and he is 3-7 with a 5.13 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. This was a solid move for the Phillies as Youman could help them in the rotation at some point in 2008.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Chris Snelling from the D-Rays for cold hard cash

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 November 2007 at 7:39 pm

The Phillies have acquired another injury prone outfielder to put in their stable. Snelling played in 30 games last season for the Nationals & A’s and he was 17 for 69 (.246 avg) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. No one has ever questioned Snelling’s talent but his knees often require surgery and are likely shot. He has now played in 89 major league games in his career and he is 53 for 221 (.240 avg, .737 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 6 homers and 19 RBIs. At least he didn’t cost the Phillies much.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Tadahito Iguchi

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 November 2007 at 7:33 pm

A clause in Iguchi’s first contract with the White Sox allowed him to become a free agent after three seasons so the Phillies had to release him. Iguchi played pretty well for the Phillies after he was acquired from the White Sox to replace the injured Chase Utley. He played in 45 games for the Phillies and he was 42 for 138 (.304 avg, .803 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 3 homers, 12 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Iguchi will likely have no problem finding a starting job somewhere in the major leagues for the 2008 season. Iguchi has now played in 408 games in his major league career and he is 422 for 1,531 (.276 avg, .768 OPS) with 238 runs scored, 42 homers, 181 RBIs and 40 stolen bases.

The Philadelphia Phillies re-sign lefty reliever J.C. Romero

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Sunday 11 November 2007 at 1:51 am

The Phillies have re-signed lefty reliever J.C. Romero to a 3-year, $12 million dollar contract. Romero pitched in 51 games for the Phillies last season and he was 1-2 with a 1.24 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He pitched 36.1 innings last season for the Phillies and he allowed 15 hits, walked 25 batters and whiffed 31. The Phillies hope they will get the good Romero over the life of this contract. Romero has now pitched in 466 games (22 starts) in his major league career and he’s now 28-24 with 3 saves, a 4.30 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Brad Lidge in a five player deal

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Wednesday 7 November 2007 at 11:55 pm

The Phillies have acquired Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett from the Astros for Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary and minor league 3B Mike Costanzo. Lidge will take over as the closer for the Phillies from day #1 with Brett Myers moving back into the starting rotation. Lidge pitched in 66 games last season for the Astros and he 5-3 with 19 saves, a 3.36 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Lidge has now pitched in 378 games (1 start) in his career and he is 23-20 with 123 saves, a 3.30 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. His stuff has always been downright nasty as he has 561 career whiffs in only 401 innings. Brett Myers will return to the rotation which is where the Phillies need him the most despite him doing a good job as the closer last season. Myers has now pitched in 192 games (143 starts) in his major league career and he is 59-47 with 21 saves, a 4.34 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Eric Bruntlett will serve as a pinch hitter and reserve infielder for the Phillies next season. He played in 80 games last season for the Astros and he was 34 for 138 (.246 avg, .629 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 0 homers, 14 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Bruntlett has now played in 320 career games in the majors and he is 118 for 472 (.250 avg, .687 OPS) with 63 runs scored, 9 homers, 50 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. This was a good move for the Phillies as it improves both the bullpen and the starting rotation.
