The Philadelphia Phillies claim Ray Olmedo from the Pirates

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 26 February 2008 at 8:18 pm

The Phillies have claimed Ray Olmedo off waivers from the Phillies. The 26-year old shortstop is known way more for his mitt than his bat. Olmedo played in 27 games last season for the Blue Jays and he was 11 for 51 (.216 avg, .539 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 1 RBI. He has now played in 198 games in his major league career and he is 92 for 403 (.228 avg, .569 OPS) with 45 runs scored, 2 homers and 26 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies will likely get solid production from the catchers in 2008

29-year old righty swinging Carlos Ruiz got his big chance last season and he seized the opportunity. He will head into the 2008 season as the starting catcher. Ruiz played in 115 games last season for the Phillies and he was 97 for 374 (.259 avg, .736 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 6 homers and 54 RBIs. Look for his power to improve this season as he will likely at least double his home run total of last season. Ruiz is also a solid defender as he nailed 25% of the runners trying to steal on him and Phillies pitchers had a 4.59 ERA when he was catching.

35-year old righty swinging Chris Coste has waited a long time to make it to the majors and he wants to stay. He will be the backup catcher for the Phillies this season. Coste played in 48 games last season for the Phillies and he was 36 for 129 (.279 avg, .730 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 5 homers and 22 RBIs. Coste also played decent on defense as he nailed 29% of the runners that tried to steal on him last season. Phillies pitchers had a 4.93 ERA when he caught. Look for him to have another decent season for the Phillies.

30-year old lefty swinging Pete LaForest will likely be the #3 catcher on the Phillies and start the season in AAA. He has always been a good minor league hitter who never could make the jump to the bigs. He played in 86 games in AAA ball last season and he was 68 for 296 (.230 avg, .891 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 29 homers and 72 RBIs. He played in 24 games with the Padres and Phillies last season and he was 10 for 36 (.278 avg, .784 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs. Defense is not LaForest’s strong suit as he was 0 for 5 throwing out runners at the major league level and pitchers had a 7.15 ERA with him behind the plate.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE 2008 SEASON: C

The Philadelphia Phillies lose Brad Lidge

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 25 February 2008 at 10:59 pm

The Phillies have lost closer Brad Lidge for the next 3-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee. If Lidge isn’t ready to start the season, the Phillies will go with Tom Gordon until he’s ready to return. The Phillies can’t afford to be without Lidge long as Gordon is not dependable as a closer anymore.

The Winds of Change are blowing for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Saturday 16 February 2008 at 5:45 pm

The Phillies made some nice moves this off-season that should enable them to defend their N.L. East Crown. The Brad Lidge trade was the biggest move for the Phillies because it will enable Brett Myers to return to the starting rotation. Adding Kris Benson and Chad Durbin to the pitching staff were nice low risk moves to help with depth. Signing Pedro Feliz and Geoff Jenkins in the off-season will even inject more power into the starting lineup for the Phillies. Outfielder So Taguchi and infielder Eric Bruntlett should improve the depth on the bench for the Phillies.

OFF SEASON GRADE FOR THE FRONT OFFICE: B

The Philadelphia Phillies lose Anderson Garcia on waivers to the Mariners

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 16 February 2008 at 5:34 pm

The Seattle Mariners have claimed 26-year old righty reliever Anderson Garcia off waivers from the Phillies. Garcia only pitched in 1 game for the Phillies last season and he worked 2/3 of an inning and he allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run. Garcia pitched in 51 games (1 start) in AA+AAA ball last season and he was 1-7 with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. This is not a big loss for the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Kris Benson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 13 February 2008 at 7:51 pm

The Phillies have signed 33-year old righty starter Kris Benson to a minor league contract. Benson last pitched in 2006 with the Orioles as he missed all of last season due to rotator cuff surgery. He has now pitched in 195 games (all starts) in his major league career and he is 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. Look for Benson to win a job in the Phillies starting rotation as long as he proves his health in spring training.
