The Philadelphia Phillies look to try to improve in free agency

The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to replace Pat Burrell in left field with another free agent. Bobby Abreu, Adam Dunn and Raul Ibanez appear to be high on the Phillies’ shopping list. If the Phillies can’t sign any of those guys they will likely offer a contract to Pat Burrell. The Phillies will be on the hunt for 1 or two starting pitchers in free agency. The Phillies would like to retain Jamie Moyer but only at their price. If they deem Moyer too expensive they might consider making a play for Mike Hampton. The Phillies could also think about making a offer to Randy Johnson if they lose out on Moyer but he will likely cost more money than him. The Phillies will likely be in on Ben Sheets, Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, Ryan Dempster, Jon Garland and Braden Looper. The Phillies could use a veteran righty for the bullpen and they would likely consider Russ Springer, Kyle Farnsworth, Juan Cruz, David Weathers, Bobby Howry, Chan-Ho Park and Tyler Walker. The Phillies could also use a lefty to team with J.C. Romero. They likely have interest in Joe Beimel, Brian Shouse, Jeremy Affeldt, Arthur Rhodes, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes, Alan Embree, Will Ohman and Trever Miller.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 6 November 2008 at 1:47 am

The Phillies have declined 40-year old righty reliever Tom Gordon’s 2009 option worth $4.5 million bucks. The Phillies might have picked the option up if Gordon was healthy…but he’s not. Gordon pitched in 34 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last season and he was 5-4 with 2 saves, a 5.16 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Gordon pitched three years for the Phillies covering 137 games (0 starts) in which he was 11-10 with 42 saves, a 4.19 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This could be the end of the line for Gordon but he pitched well overall for the Phillies.
