The Phillies have signed 34-year old righty swinging infielder Jorge Velandia and 34-year old righty swinging outfielder Damon Hollins to minor league deals. Velandia played in 10 games for the Indians and Blue Jays last season and he was 3 for 15 (.200 avg) with 1 run scored. He has now played in 174 games in his major league career in which he is 46 for 244 (.189 avg, 544 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 2 homers, 23 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He is known for his defense. Hollins played in 105 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 80 for 363 (.220 avg, .726 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 16 homers and 55 RBIs. He has played in 256 games in his major league career and he is 172 for 712 (.242 avg, .675 OPS) with 85 runs scored, 28 homers, 86 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. These signings were just for organizational depth so don’t expect too much out of either of these guys in 2009.
