The Philadelphia Phillies will be a interesting team to watch in free agency

The Phillies have 10 prospective free agents on the roster going into the winter. Cliff Lee has a $8 million dollar option for next season and the Phillies will certainly pick that up. The Phillies have a $5 million dollar option on starting 3B Pedro Feliz or they can buy him out for $500,000 bucks. It will be interesting to see if they pick up his option or look for a cheaper alternative. Paul Bako, Miguel Cairo, Matt Stairs, Rodrigo Lopez, Brett Myers, Scott Eyre, Pedro Martinez and Chan Ho Park are the other players elgible for free agency. The Phillies don’t have a burning need to bring any of those guys back but I would think that Scott Eyre or Pedro Martinez make the most sense on maybe a 1-year deal. If the Phillies let Feliz go they will likely be in the market for a new starting 3B. Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, Joe Crede, Troy Glaus and Mark DeRosa all make sense there. The Phillies also might be in the market for one more starting pitcher to fill out the rotation. Look for middle tier guys like Brad Penny, Carl Pavano, Justin Duchscherer, Jarrod Washburn and Doug Davis to interest the Phillies. The Phillies could use reinforcements from both the right and left side out of the bullpen. Mike Gonzalez, Joe Beimel, John Grabow, Ron Mahay, Darren Oliver, Will Ohman, Brian Shouse and Jamie Walker could interest the Phillies from the left side. From the right side guys like David Weathers, Danys Baez, Brendan Donnelly, Kiko Calero, Octavio Dotel, LaTroy Hawkins, Bobby Howry, Brandon Lyon or Russ Springer all makes sense for the Phillies from the right side. With Paul Bako almost certain to retire the Phillies will need a backup catcher for next season. Brad Ausmus, Josh Bard, Henry Blanco, Ramon Castro, Jason LaRue, Jose Molina, Mike Redmond, Brian Schneider and Gregg Zaun could all be considered for the job. The Phillies could also be in the market for a backup outfielder with Reed Johnson, Randy Winn, Fernando Tatis, Rocco Baldelli, Austin Kearns, Rick Ankiel, Andruw Jones and Brian Giles all on the short list. The Phillies fell short of their goal which was to win back to back World Series Championships so look for them to be aggessive over the winter in a attempt to improve the roster for the 2010 season.
