The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Nelson Figueroa

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 31 May 2010 at 4:43 pm

The Phillies have designated 36-year old reliever/starter Nelson Figueroa for assignment to make room on the roster for Brad Lidge who is getting activated from the D.L. Figueroa has pitched in 9 games (1 start) for the Phillies this year and he is 1-1 with 1 save, a 4.82 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Figueroa will likely reject a minor league assignment if he clears waivers likely ending his days with the Phillies.

Roy Halladay tosses a perfect game for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 31 May 2010 at 4:41 pm

33-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay tossed a perfect game (the 20th in MLB history) against the Marlins last Saturday. He whiffed 11 helpless Marlins as he threw 72 strikes out of his 115 total pitches. Halladay has started 11 games for the Phillies this year and he is 7-3 with a 1.99 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP as he has been outstanding this year. He has only given up 73 hits this season in 86 innings pitched as he has been missing a ton of bats this year. He is being really aggressive in the strike zone as usual as he has whiffed 70 batters while only walking 12. Halladay has been awesome this year and there is no reason to think he can’t keep up the outstanding work.

The Philadelphia Phillies are scouting the Chicago White Sox

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were the GM, Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 25 May 2010 at 10:05 am

The Phillies are scouting the White Sox right now looking at J.J. Putz and Bobby Jenks. I think a deal can be made between these two teams as the Phillies are desperate for a closer. I would offer the White Sox Antonio Bastardo, Scott Mathieson and Ben Francisco for Bobby Jenks and infielder Jayson Nix. With Jimmy Rollins and Brad Lidge all beat up getting Jenks and Nix would be outstanding. From the White Sox side of things they would be shedding Jenks’ salary while getting two live arms for the pen and Ben Francisco who could work his way into a lot of atbats for the White Sox who are struggling offensively this year.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Paul Hoover

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 24 May 2010 at 2:30 pm

The Phillies have designated 34-year old righty swinging catcher Paul Hoover for assignment to make room on the roster for Brian Schneider who is coming off the D.L. Hoover played in 6 games for the Phillies this season and he is 5 for 18 (.278 avg, .770 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 2 RBIs. I’m thinking that Hoover would accept a minor league assignment with the Phillies as he played well enough to be called right back up if something happened to Carlos Ruiz or Brian Schneider.

The Philadelphia Phillies put Jimmy Rollins back on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 22 May 2010 at 4:37 pm

Wow that didn’t last too long. Rollins has now played in 12 games this season for the Phillies and he is 14 of 41 (.341 avg, 1.096 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He will be missed as the alternatives are not the best. 38-year old righty swinging Juan Castro and 32-year old righty swinging Wilson Valdez (recalled from AAA) will share SS while Rollins is out of action. Castro has played in 24 games for the Phillies this year and he is 18 of 70 (.257 avg, .570 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 11 RBIs. He will likely get to play 3 out of every 5 games with Valdez getting the other two. Valdez has played in 18 games for the Phillies this year and he is 12 of 52 (.231 avg, .596 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 5 RBIs. The Phillies will likely give Rollins a little more time this time around to get healthy before activating him from the D.L.

Roy Halladay is giving the Philadelphia Phillies exactly what they are paying for

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 21 May 2010 at 5:25 pm

The Phillies traded for righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay knowing that he was a horse who could give the bullpen a rest every five days. He has started 9 games this season and he already has 4 complete games and 2 shutouts. He is 6-2 with a sparkling 1.64 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP so far this year. He has pitched 71 1/3 innings for the Phillies this season allowing 65 hits, walking 10 batters and whiffing 58 as he has been simply outstanding this season. I’m actually shocked that Halladay already has 2 losses on the year with the team he has backing him up. I fully expect Halladay to be one of the leaders (if not the winner) in the Cy Young Award Voting at the end of the 2010 season.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Wilson Valdez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 19 May 2010 at 10:36 am

The Phillies have designated 32-year old righty swinging infielder Wilson Valdez for assignment to make room for Jimmy Rollins who was activated off the D.L. Valdez played in 18 games for the Phillies this season and he was 12 of 52 (.231 avg, .596 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 5 RBIs. The Phillies hope that Valdez clears waivers so they can stash him in AAA if he accepts an assignment. Rollins has played in 9 games for the Phillies this year and he is 11 of 31 (.355 avg, 1.120 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer, 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Look for the Phillies to have the offense in full throttle with Rollins back at the top of the lineup.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Brad Lidge on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 16 May 2010 at 8:00 am

The Phillies have placed closer Brad Lidge on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Lidge has pitched in 4 games for the Phillies this season and he is 0-0 with 1 save, a 2.70 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. The Phillies have recalled 24-year old lefty Antonio Bastardo to replace Lidge in the pen. Bastardo pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this season and he was 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. It appears as if 38-year old righty Jose Contreras will get a shot to close while Lidge is out of action. He has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this season and he is 2-1 with 1 save, a 0.68 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP. He has only given up 7 hits in 13 1/3 innings this season while whiffing 18 batters. Contreras certainly has the stuff to succeed as a closer if his head is up to it.

The Philadelphia Phillies were smart to hold onto Domonic Brown

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 14 May 2010 at 9:21 am

The Phillies gave up a lot of prospects in trades over the winter but they kept 22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Domonic Brown who is their #1 prospect according to Baseball America. Brown has played in 27 games in AA-ball so far this season and he is 32 of 94 (.340 avg, 1.088 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 7 homers, 21 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Brown has now played in 358 games in his five years in the minors and he is 392 of 1,344 (.292 avg, .818 OPS) with 219 runs scored, 35 homers, 185 RBIs and 76 stolen bases. The Phillies are smart to be bringing Brown along slowly as they don’t need him quite yet.

Jayson Werth is crushing the baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies right now

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 13 May 2010 at 11:56 am

31-year old righty swinging Jayson Werth knows that free agency awaits for him at the end of the season so he has the pedal to the metal right now. Werth has played in 33 games for the Phillies so far this season and he is 40 of 116 (.345 avg, 1.104 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 18 doubles, 7 homers, 27 RBIs and 2 stolen bases already. Werth could have a monster season for the Phillies this year and that would make it more likely that he would leave after the year as he would have a lot of suitors.
