The Phillies have placed backup catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list with a strained Achilles tendon. He has played in 7 games for the Phillies this season and he is 3 of 18 (.167 avg, .452 OPS) with 3 runs scored. The Phillies have called up 34-year old righty swinging catcher Paul Hoover to replace Schneider as the backup catcher. Hoover has played in 19 games this season in AAA-ball and he is 18 of 67 (.269 avg, .741 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs. He has played in 31 games in his major league career and he is 20 of 78 (.256 avg, .544 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 6 RBIs. But, he has whiffed 26 times in the majors with only 2 walks as he has questionable plate discipline. Look for Carlos Ruiz’ workload to increase until Schneider is ready to return to action.

Jamie Moyer made history for the Philadelphia Philles last night

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 8 May 2010 at 10:34 am

47-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer became the oldest pitcher ever to throw a complete game shutout last night against the Atlanta Braves. He only gave up 2 hits without walking any hitters last night! Moyer was very aggressive as he had 1 three pitch inning last night and he threw 71 of his 105 pitches for strikes. The Phillies won the game 7-0 so there was never much of a thought of pulling Moyer from the game last night. He has started 6 games for the Phillies this season and he is 4-2 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He has only walked 5 batters in 39 innings pitched so far this season. It appears that Moyer figures he only has so many bullets left in his gun so he is going to attack the strike zone. He now has 262 career wins in the major leagues and he can get to 300 if he keeps pitching well and can stay healthy.

Scott Mathieson could get another shot with the Philadelphia Phillies soon

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 5 May 2010 at 8:12 am

26-year old righty reliever Scott Mathieson didn’t look too good in his first shot with the Phillies in 2006 when he pitched in 9 games (8 starts) for them in which he was 1-4 with a 7.47 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. He has been hurting lately as he missed all of the 2008 season due to major surgery. But, he is looking sharp right now and the Phillies need another arm in the bullpen so Mathieson could get another shot with them soon. He was the Phillies’ #15 rated prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Mathieson has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball so far this season and he is 1-0 with 3 saves, a 0.77 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Mathieson is doing a great job of missing bats in AAA as he has only given up 7 hits in 11 2/3 innings while whiffing 11 batters. If Mathieson keeps pitching well and he stays healthy he will be in Philly at some point in 2010.

He has started 44 games in his 1.5 years in Philly in which he is 16-8 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Blanton’s return will be a nice boost to the Phillies’ starting rotation. Nelson Figueroa will be bumped back to the pen where he will work in long relief for the Phillies. Figueroa has pitched in 5 games (1 start) for the Phillies this year and he is 1-1 with 1 save, a 3.38 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.
