Drew Carpenter is pitching pretty well in AAA for the Philadelphia Phillies

25-year old righty starting pitcher Drew Carpenter is pitching solid baseball in AAA. He was once one of the brightest prospects in the Phillies’ minor league system but he no longer was one of the top 30 in their system coming into this season according to Baseball America. Carpenter has started 10 games this season in AAA-ball and he is 5-4 with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Carpenter has only walked 16 batters in 56 1/3 innings this season as he has been showing outstanding control. Carpenter has pitched in 4 games (1 start) over the last two years for the Phillies and he is 1-0 with a 9.45 ERA and a 2.55 WHIP. Don’t be surprised to see Carpenter traded in the next couple of months if he’s pitching well as the Phillies are going to need more help in the bullpen.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Willy Taveras

The Phillies have signed 28-year old righty swinging outfielder Willy Taveras to a minor league deal. Taveras played in 27 games for the Nationals earlier this season and he was 7 of 35 (.200 avg, .500 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 670 games in his seven years in the majors and he is 662 of 2,412 (.274 avg, .647 OPS) with 358 runs scored, 8 homers, 128 RBIs and 195 stolen bases. Taveras is a good guy to have stashed at AAA because of his speed so I really like this signing for the Phillies. Plus, he is a much better player than the recently departed DeWayne Wise.

DeWayne Wise opts out of contract with the Philadelphia Phillies

32-year old lefty swinging outfielder DeWayne Wise has opted out of his contract with the Phillies thus becoming a free agent. Wise played in 36 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 37 of 136 (.272 avg, .832 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 4 homers, 13 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Wise has played in 324 games in his major league career and he is 132 of 610 (.216 avg, .636 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 17 homers, 61 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Wise will likely hook on with another team but the Phillies won’t lose any sleep over watching him walk away.
