Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 31 July 2010 at 10:23 pm

The Phillies have released 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder Chris Duffy. Duffy played in 91 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 84 of 346 (.243 avg, .668 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 5 homers, 34 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. The Phillies just didn’t see any way that Duffy would play for them at some point in 2010 so they did the right thing in cutting him loose.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 29 July 2010 at 4:26 pm

The Phillies have acquired 32-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Oswalt from the Astros for 27-year old lefty starting pitcher J.A. Happ, 19-year old lefty swinging outfielder Anthony Gose and 19-year old switch hitting shortstop Jonathan Villar. Oswalt has started 20 games for the Astros this season and he was 6-12 with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Oswalt has only given up 109 hits in 129 innings this season and he has whiffed 120 batters showing that he’s still on top of his game. Oswalt also has pinpoint control as he has only walked 34 batters this season. Oswalt has now pitched in 303 games (291 starts) in his ten years in the majors and he is 143-82 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Oswalt has been to 3 All-Star Games in his major league career and he has been in the top five in voting for the N.L. Cy Young Award 5 times. J.A. Happ has started 3 games for the Phillies this year and he was 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. He pitched in 47 games (31 starts) in parts of four years with the Phillies and he is 14-5 with a 3.11 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. The Astros hope that he tightens up his control a bit as he has walked 84 batters in 217 career innings in the show. Anthony Gose was the Phillies’ #6 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Gose has played in 103 games in A-ball this season and he is 110 of 418 (.263 avg, .710 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. Jonathan Villar was the Phillies’ #22 prospect heading into this season. Villar has played in 100 games in A-ball this season and he was 101 of 371 (.272 avg, .690 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 2 homers, 36 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. This was a outstanding trade for the Phillies as Oswalt gives them an amazing top three in the rotation with Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels.

The Phillies have placed starting CF Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a left abdominal strain. Victorino has played in 99 games for the Phillies this year and he is 101 of 404 (.250 avg, .749 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 15 homers, 53 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. The Phillies have recalled their top prospect, 23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Domonic Brown to replace Victorino on the active roster and in the starting lineup. Brown has played in 93 games in AA+AAA-ball this year and he was 112 of 343 (.327 avg, .980 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 20 homers, 68 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. The Philadelphia Phillies are ready to recall J.A. Happ from the minors

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 24 July 2010 at 5:02 pm

27-year old lefty starting pitcher J.A. Happ has been mostly forgotten about by the Phillies. He has been on quite an extended rehab assignment in the minors. Happ has pitched in 9 games (8 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball this year and he is 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. He pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the Phillies before getting injured and he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. Happ has pitched in 46 games (30 starts) in parts of four years with the Phillies and he is 14-5 with a 3.06 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Happ pitches well in Jamie Moyer’s old spot in the rotation because they need the help if they are going to make a run at the Braves in the N.L. East.

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed 35-year old lefty swinging outfielder Timo Perez to a minor league deal. Perez played in 41 games earlier this season in AAA for the Dodgers and he was 34 of 115 (.296 avg, .762 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Perez has played in 603 games in his 8 years in the majors and he is 449 of 1,671 (.269 avg, .690 OPS) with 187 runs scored, 26 homers, 185 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. This was a solid signing for the Phillies as Perez might be able to help them off the bench in the near future.

Jamie Moyer is probably done for the season for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 22 July 2010 at 5:51 pm

The Phillies have likely lost 47-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer for the rest of the season due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and a strain of the pronator tendon. Moyer started 19 games for the Phillies this year and he was 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He pitched 5 years for the Phillies appearing in 123 games (118 starts) and he was 56-40 with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Moyer’s career could be over and that would be a shame as he was still effective for the Phillies this season. He likely win finish his major league career with 267 wins.

The Philadelphia Phillies demote Kyle Kendrick to AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 July 2010 at 5:59 pm

The Phillies have demoted 25-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick to AAA. Kendrick has pitched in 20 games (18 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Kendrick’s biggest problem was gopher balls as he gave up 18 homers in 108 1/3 innings for the Phillies. The Phillies have recalled 25-year old righty starting pitcher Andrew Carpenter to replace Kendrick in the starting rotation. Carpenter has started 18 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He has also pitched in 4 games (1 start) in his two years in the majors and he is 1-0 with a 9.45 ERA and a 2.55 WHIP.

If I were running the Philadelphia Phillies this is what I would do at the trade deadline

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were the GM,Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 July 2010 at 9:15 am

I think the Phillies have to make some deals to catch up with the Atlanta Braves. First off I would trade with the Cubs for 2B Mike Fontenot who would start until Chase Utley is ready to return. The Cubs bullpen is in shambles so they would likely jump at an offer of 24-year old righty David Herndon and 26-year old righty Scott Mathieson. The Orioles are looking to deal away a lot of their veterans so if I was running the Phillies I would offer up 23-yar old lefty reliever Matt Way straight up for lefty reliever Will Ohman. I’m certain the Orioles would make that deal. I don’t think the Phillies can trust Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson late in games and with that in mind I would offer 24-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo and 18-year old lefty swinging 1B Jonathan Singleton for Matt Capps of the Nationals. The Phillies have never been shy about trading prospects and if they could add Capps, Ohman and Fontenot they would be a much better team going forward.

Domonic Brown isn’t going anywhere except Philly for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 19 July 2010 at 10:08 am

22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Dominic Brown is the one player the Phillies just refuse to trade. He was the Phillies’ #1 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Brown has played in 84 games in AA+AAA-ball this year and he is 100 of 306 (.327 avg, .984 OPS) with 60 runs scored, 19 homers, 63 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. If Raul Ibanez doesn’t start hitting soon don’t be surprised to see the Phillies replace him with Brown.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Juan Castro

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 17 July 2010 at 1:06 pm

The Phillies have released 38-year old righty swinging infielder Juan Castro. Castro played in 54 games this season for the Phillies and he was 25 of 126 (.198 avg, .475 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers and 13 RBIs. Castro was released to make room on the roster for Placido Polanco who has been activated from the D.L. Polanco has played in 62 games for the Phillies this year and he is 83 of 261 (.318 avg, .782 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 5 homers and 27 RBIs. This will give the Phillies a nice jolt to the lineup as they have missed Polanco’s bat while he was out of action.
