The Phillies have designated 36-year old righty reliever/starter Nelson Figueroa for assignment. He pitched in 13 games (1 start) for the Phillies this year and he is 2-1 with 1 save, a 3.46 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Figueroa has also started 3 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP. He should have no problem finding a new job if he wants to leave the Phillies.

UPDATE: (7/21/2010) – The Phillies have lost Nelson Figueroa on waivers to the Houston Astros.

The Philadelphia Phillies lose Quintin Berry on waivers

The Phillies have lost 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Quintin Berry on waivers to the Padres. Berry played in 66 games in AA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 50 of 238 (.210 avg, .606 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 2 homers, 25 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He has played in 523 games in his five years in the minors and he is 524 of 1,962 (.267 avg, .692 OPS) with 307 runs scored, 13 homers, 153 RBIs and 196 stolen bases. This is not a big loss for the Phillies as Berry’s only real asset is his speed and you can’t steal first base.

The Philadelphia Phillies limp into the All-Star Break

The Phillies have been ransacked by injury this season which is one of the reasons that they are in third place in the N.L. East. The Phillies are 47-40 on the season which has them 4.5 games behind the Braves. Here is a close look at the surprises and disappointments for the Phillies so far this year:

Surprises: 47-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer has really been solid for the Phillies so far this year. Moyer has started 17 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 9-8 with a 4.51 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. The Phillies need him to keep up the good work in the second half. 26-year old lefty Cole Hamels is looking like his old self again this year. He has started 18 games for the Phillies this year and he is 7-7 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. 38-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras has been really effective as a full time reliever for the first time in his career. Contreras has pitched in 35 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 4-3 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. 32-year old righty swinging infielder Wilson Valdez has done a solid job filling in for Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins this year. He has played in 55 games for the Phillies this year and he is 42 of 168 (.250 avg, .665 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 4 homers, 21 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Disappointments: 38-year old LF Raul Ibanez is really starting to look his age this season. He has played in 85 games for the Phillies this year and he is 71 of 292 (.243 avg, .724 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 7 homers, 39 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. 29-year old righty starting pitcher Joe Blanton has really been awful this season for the Phillies. Blanton has started 13 games for the Phillies this year and he is 3-5 with a 6.41 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. He has given up 103 hits (15 homers) in only 80 innings pitched this year. 29-year old righty reliever Ryan Madson has really been awful for the Phillies this year. He has pitched in 11 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 2-0 with 4 saves, a 6.55 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. Madson has missed most of the season because he hurt himself throwing a temper tantrum after a loss early on.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Dane Sardinha

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 10 July 2010 at 5:28 pm

The Phillies have designated 31-year old righty swinging catcher Dane Sardinha. Sardinha played in 13 games for the Phillies this year and he was 8 of 39 (.205 avg, .712 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 3 homers and 8 RBIs. The Phillies will replace him on the roster with Carlos Ruiz who is getting activated from the D.L. Ruiz has played in 51 games for the Phillies this year and he is 42 of 153 (.275 avg, .764 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 2 homers and 13 RBIs. It’s good to have Ruiz back in action and I feel confident that Sardinha will accept a minor league assignment if he clears waivers.

The Philadelphia Phillies need to make some adjustments to the roster this month

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were the GM,Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 6 July 2010 at 4:23 pm

The Phillies are 43-38 on the season which has them in third place in the N.L. East, 5 games behind the Braves. The Phillies need to add a solid starting pitcher and a couple of infielders who can start now and return to the bench when Chase Utley and Placido Polanco come off the D.L. Targets should include guys like Ty Wigginton, Mike Aviles, Mark Ellis, Jose Lopez, Adam Kennedy, Christian Guzman, Craig Counsell, Mike Fontenot, Jeff Baker, Jeff Keppinger and Andy LaRoche. As far as the starting pitcher goes I don’t think it will be Pedro Martinez as it would take him some time to get into shape. Don’t be surprised to see the Phillies go after Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt or Dan Haren. More than likely though they will likely turn to the second tier going after guys like Jeremy Guthrie, Fausto Carmona, Jake Westbrook, Ben Sheets, Ricky Nolasco, Dave Bush, Ted Lilly, Brett Myers, Wandy Rodriguez, Edwin Jackson or Rodrigo Lopez. The Phillies have to make some moves if they want to make the playoffs because the Braves and Mets are for real this season.

The Philadelphia Phillies have three All-Stars

Blogged under Awards,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 5 July 2010 at 9:48 am

2B Chase Utley was voted in by the fans to start the All-Star Game but he will have to miss it due to injury. Utley has played in 72 games this season for the Phillies and he was 73 of 264 (.277 avg, .849 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 11 homers, 37 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Martin Prado of the Braves. This was the fifth time Utley was selected to play in the All-Star Game in his career. 1B Ryan Howard was picked as a reserve for the N.L. Howard has played in 80 games this season for the Phillies and he is 93 of 317 (.293 avg, .850 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 15 homers and 59 RBIs. This will be Howard’s third appearance in the mid-summer classic. Roy Halladay has made the pitching staff for the N.L. He has pitched in 17 games (all starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 9-7 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Halladay has only walked 17 batters in 130 innings this season as he has been very aggressive in the strike zone. This will be Halladay’s 7th All-Star Game of his career.

The Philadelphia Phillies expect more out of Trevor May

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 3 July 2010 at 3:48 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies expect more out of 20-year old righty starting pitcher Trevor May. After all, he was considered the #5 prospect in the Phillies’ system coming into this season according to Baseball America. May has pitched in 16 games (14 starts) in A-ball this season and he is 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. He has now pitched in 36 games (31 starts) in his three years in the minors for the Phillies and he is 10-7 with a 3.73 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. May does have great stuff as evidenced by the fact that he has only allowed 122 hits in his minor league career while whiffing 196 batters in 159 1/3 innings. He does have control issues as he has walked 111 in the minors and that is by far the biggest issue with him. If he starts throwing more strikes the Phillies could put him on the fast track.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Brian Bocock

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 3 July 2010 at 12:22 pm

The Phillies have decided to designate infielder Brian Bocock for assignment to make room on the roster for 34-year old righty swinging infielder Cody Ransom. Bocock didn’t get in any games before getting DFA’d by the Phillies. Ransom has played in 82 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 71 of 298 (.238 avg, .766 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 16 homers and 51 RBIs. He has also played in 197 games in his major league career and he is 61 of 262 (.233 avg, .722 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 7 homers, 34 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Ransom has whiffed 83 times in his major league career so he has some holes in his swing. Ransom is a vastly superior hitter to Bocock and he can handle any infield position defensively so he could get a lot of P.T. at 2B and 3B unless they make a trade for a infielder.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Chris Aguila from the Blue Jays

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 3 July 2010 at 12:18 pm

The Phillies have acquired 31-year old righty swinging oufielder Chris Aguila from the Blue Jays for future considerations. Aguila has already played in 4 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies and he is 2 of 8 (.250 avg, .875 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI. Aguila played in 44 games for the Jays’ AAA team earlier this season and he was 44 of 160 (.275 avg, .802 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 4 homers, 21 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Aguila last played in the majors in 2008 with the Mets. He has played in 149 games in his major league career so far and he is 53 of 230 (.230 avg, .624 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 3 homers, 16 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. I like this move for the Phillies as it never hurts to stash guys with major league experience in AAA.

The Philadelphia Phillies trade Luis Maza to the Astros

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 3 July 2010 at 12:14 pm

The Phillies have recently traded 30-year old righty swinging infielder Luis Maza to the Astros for a future considerations. Maza played in 51 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 37 of 168 (.220 avg, .551 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 0 homers, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base. With all of the injuries the Phillies have had recently in the infield they probably wish they would have held onto Maza just a tad longer.
