The Phillies have acquired 36-year old righty swinging 1B Mike Sweeney from the Mariners for either a player to be named later or cash. Sweeney played in 30 games for the Mariners this season and he was 26 of 99 (.263 avg, .802 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 6 homers, 18 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Sweeney is kind of brittle as he was just activated off the D.L. due to back spasms. He will make a solid platoon partner with Ross Gload until Ryan Howard is ready to return to action. Sweeney has now played in 1,428 games in his 16 years in the majors and he is 1,528 of 5,136 (.298 avg, .853 OPS) with 749 runs scored, 213 homers, 901 RBIs and 52 stolen bases. I like this pickup for the Phillies as the price was right.
