The Phillies have signed 34-year old righty reliever Jason Grilli to a minor league deal. Grilli last pitched back in 2009 with the Rockies & Rangers. Grilli pitched in 52 games (0 starts) in 2009 in which he was 2-3 with 1 save, a 5.32 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. He has now pitched in 238 games (16 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 18-18 with 2 saves, a 4.74 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Grilli will get a shot this spring to make the Phillies’ bullpen but not much should be expected of him as he’s sure to be rusty.

The Philadelphia Phillies look solid behind the plate for 2011

32-year old righty swinging Carlos Ruiz will be the main man behind the plate for the Phillies once again in 2011. Ruiz has played in 121 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 112 of 371 (.302 avg, .847 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 8 homers and 53 RBIs. Ruiz will likely to continue to improve as a hitter as he showed good plate discipline last year. He walked 55 times while only whiffing 54 times last season for the Phillies. Ruiz had 6 errors and 4 passed balls in 118 games behind the plate for the Phillies. He also threw out 18 of 70 (25.7%) runners trying to steal on him last season and Phillies’ pitchers had a 3.33 ERA with him behind the plate. Ruiz is a good all-around catcher and he steps up when the games get big in October. I look for him to have another really good year in 2011 for the Phillies.

34-year old lefty swinging Brian Schneider is a very solid backup for the Phillies. He played in 47 games for the Phillies last season and he was 30 of 125 (.240 avg, .729 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 4 homers and 15 RBIs. Schneider is basically a .250 hitter with some pop and the Phillies would be happy with that kind of production out of him in 2011. Schneider had 2 errors and only 1 passed ball in 46 games behind the plate for the Phillies last year. Schneider threw out 8 of 38 (21.1%) runners trying to steal against him last season and Phillies pitchers had a 4.57 ERA with him behind the plate.

30-year old righty Erik Kratz will likely start the 2011 season in AAA. He played in 70 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 63 of 230 (.274 avg, .875 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 9 homers, 41 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He also played in 9 games for the Pirates last season in which he was 4 of 34 (.118 avg, .284 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Kratz didn’t have any errors or passed balls in 9 games with the Pirates last season. He also threw out 4 of 7 (57.1%) runners trying to steal on him last season and Pirates’ pitchers had a 4.42 ERA with him behind the plate which is pretty impressive because they had a awful pitching staff.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE PHILLIES CATCHERS IN 2011: B

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Matt Anderson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Friday 14 January 2011 at 2:43 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed 34-year old righty reliever Matt Anderson to a minor league deal. Anderson has not pitched since 2008 with the White Sox’ AAA-team. Anderson pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball in 2008 and he was 0-0 with a 5.60 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors way back in 2005 with the Rockies. Anderson has pitched in 257 games (0 starts) in his seven years in the majors and he is 15-7 with 26 saves, a 5.19 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. His big problem in the majors was control as he walked 157 batters in 256 2/3 innings in his career to date. Anderson used to have one of he best arms in the majors so this is a very low risk signing for the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Sergio Escalona

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Sunday 9 January 2011 at 7:24 pm

The Phillies have designated 26-year old lefty reliever Sergio Escalona for assignment to make room on the roster for J.C. Romero. Escalona pitched in 50 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 4-8 with 10 saves, a 3.81 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. His only major league experience came in 2009 with the Phillies and he worked in 14 games (0 starts) in which he was 1-0 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. I will be surprised if he gets through waivers because he is a decent lefty.

UPDATE: (1/10/2011) – The Phillies have dealt Sergio Escalona to the Houston Astros for 23-year old righty swinging 2B Albert Cartwright. Cartwright played in 127 games in A+AA-ball last season and he was 145 of 494 (.294 avg, .827 OPS) with 87 runs scored, 10 homers, 55 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Cartwright has now played in 284 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 275 of 1,012 (.272 avg, .773 OPS) with 182 runs scored, 20 homers, 112 RBIs and 71 stolen bases. The Phillies were smart to deal Escalona because I don’t think he would have cleared waivers.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Delwyn Young

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 6 January 2011 at 9:52 pm

The Phillies have signed 28-year old switch hitting 2B/OF Delwyn Young to a minor league deal. Young played in 110 games for the Pirates last season and he was 45 of 191 (.236 avg, .700 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 7 homers and 28 RBIs. He has now played in 344 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 183 of 710 (.258 avg, .709 OPS) with 76 runs scored, 17 homers, 81 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Young is a decent bench player and he will have a good shot of earning a spot on the Phillies’ bench this spring.
