31-year old lefty swinging 1B Ryan Howard had a done year in 2010…..for him! Howard played in 143 games for the Phillies last season and he was 152 of 550 (.276 avg, .859 OPS) with 87 runs scored, 31 homers, 108 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Most players would take those kind of numbers and be giddy with them, but not Howard. From 2006-2009, Howard averaged 102.0 runs scored, 49.5 homers and 143.0 RBIs per year. He hopes to get back to those kind of lofty numbers again in 2011 but he will need help from the rest of the guys in the lineup to do so. Howard had 14 errors in 139 games as he is one of the worst defensive 1B in all of baseball, but the Phillies don’t care about that too much as long as Howard keeps whacking tape measure shots.

34-year old lefty swinging Ross Gload will likely get most of his P.T. in the outfield in 2011. But, he played 18 error-free games at 1B for the Phillies last season and he starts at 1B in the road interleague games with Howard DHing.

33-year old righty swinging 1B/3B Robb Quinlan could sneak his way onto the Phillies this spring. He played in 23 games for the Angels last season and he was 4 of 33 (.121 avg, .353 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Quinlan has a career average of .276 with a .723 OPS in his first 8 years in the majors covering 458 games. That shows that Quinlan is a much better hitter than he showed last season. He made 1 error in 13 games at 1B for the Angels last season and he’s a tad better than average on D.

28-year old lefty swinging Jeff Larish is also on hand to compete for a bench job in 2011. Larish played in 27 games for the Tigers & A’s last season in which he was 12 of 67 (.179 avg, .580 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Larish has a lot of holes in his swing though as he whiffed 24 times last year. Larish didn’t make any errors in 11 games at 1B last season.
