The Phillies have designated 25-year old righty starting pitcher Andrew Carpenter for assignment. They need Carpenter’s roster spot for Brian Schlitter who was claimed off waivers from the Yankees. Carpenter pitched in 1 game (0 starts) for the Phillies last season and he was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. In parts of three years, Carpenter pitched in 5 games (1 start) in which he was 1-1 with a 9.31 ERA and a 2.28 WHIP. He gave up 17 hits (2 of which were homers) in 9 2/3 innings for the Phillies as he got hit hard. Carpenter also pitched in 27 games (all starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 8-11 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Carpenter was once one of the brightest prospects the Phillies had but they got frustrated with him as he never really pitched up to his ability. Maybe a change of scenery would aid Carpenter in getting his career back on the right path.
