The Phillies are hoping that 35-year old righty swinging 3B Placido Polanco can stay healthy in 2011. Polanco played in 132 games for the Phillies last season and he was 165 of 554 (.298 avg, .726 OPS) with 76 runs scored, 6 homers, 52 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Polanco doesn’t have a power bat which is odd for a 3B, but he is a solid .300 type hitter who has a great glove. The Phillies have more than enough power throughout the lineup to help cover for Polanco. Polanco only had 5 errors in 123 games for the Phillies at 3B last season while showing off outstanding range. Polanco is a gamer and the Phillies are a much better team with him in the lineup.
33-year old righty swinging Robb Quinlan is at spring training trying to win a bench gig for the Phillies. He played in 23 games for the Angels last season and he was 4 of 33 (.121 avg, .353 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Quinlan is a career hitter of .276 with a .723 OPS in 8 years in the majors, so look for his bat to rebound in 2011. Quinlan only played in 1 game at 3B for the Angels last season and he didn’t make any errors. He’s a slightly below average defender at 3B.
32-year old righty swinging Wilson Valdez is more of a middle infielder but he can handle playing 3B if the need arises for the Phillies. He didn’t have any errors in 7 games at 3B for the Phillies last season while showing out of this world range there.
