Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 31 August 2011 at 2:16 pm

31-year old lefty swinging 1B Ryan Howard is still providing a lot of thump in the middle of the batting order for the Phillies. He has played in 128 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 121 for 483 (.251 avg, .827 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 29 homers, 102 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Howard has played in 22 games so far in August and he is 20 for 84 (.238 avg, .867 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 8 homers, 21 RBIs and 34 whiffs. Howard has now played in 1,003 games in his first 8 years with the Phillies and he is 1,023 for 3,720 (.275 avg, .929 OPS) with 623 runs scored, 282 homers, 850 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Howard is still the most important hitter in the Phillies’ lineup as he produces a lot of runs with his bat.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire John Bowker from the Pirates

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 31 August 2011 at 2:10 pm

The Phillies have acquired 28-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF John Bowker from the Pirates for a player to be named later. Bowker played in 19 games for the Pirates this year and he was 4 for 17 (.235 avg, .610 OPS) with 2 RBIs. He has now played in 228 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 133 for 561 (.237 avg, .679 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 17 homers, 73 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Phillies will likely call him up tomorrow when rosters expand. He will give them another bat off the bench.

Mike Stutes is having a hard time so far in August for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Saturday 27 August 2011 at 10:11 am

25-year old rookie righty reliever Mike Stutes is having a rough time so far in August for the Phillies. He has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in August for the Phillies and he is 0-0 with a 5.56 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Overall this season though, Stutes is looking pretty solid. Stutes has pitched in 46 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-1 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He has only given up 37 hits while whiffing 46 batters in his first 49 innings in the majors which is pretty impressive. The Phillies hope he gets back into gear and finishes his rookie season strongly.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Cole Hamels on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 23 August 2011 at 4:27 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed 27-year old lefty starting pitcher Cole Hamels on the 15-day disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation. He was placed on the D.L. retroactive to August 13th, so he shouldn’t miss too much time. Still, the Phillies are going to be really careful with him. Hamels has started 25 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 13-7 with a 2.62 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. He has been simply amazing this year for the Phillies as he is in the midst of a “career” year. 26-year old righty Kyle Kendrick will likely replace Hamels in the rotation. Kendrick has pitched in 29 games (12 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 7-5 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has been a godsend for the Phillies this season, stepping into the rotation and pitching well whenever needed. The Phillies have called up 32-year old lefty swinging infielder Pete Orr to replace Hamels on the active roster. Orr played in 29 games earlier this year for the Phillies and he was 15 for 63 (.238 avg, .590 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Jimmy Rollins on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 22 August 2011 at 5:45 pm

The Phillies have placed 32-year old switch-hitting SS Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right groin. He has played in 121 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 132 for 493 (.268 avg, .743 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. Wilson Valdez will take over as the Phillies’ starting shortstop until Rollins is ready to return to action. Valdez will do a solid job defensively but the Phillies will miss Rollins’ bat while he’s out of action.

The Philadelphia Phillies need Michael Martinez to pick it up with the bat

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Monday 22 August 2011 at 11:00 am

The Phillies took 28-year old righty swinging infielder Michael Martinez over the winter in the Rule 5 Draft away from the division rival Washington Nationals. They didn’t expect him to play much for them in 2011, but injuries have dictated otherwise. Martinez has played in 66 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 33 for 155 (.213 avg, .550 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 2 homers, 20 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Phillies really need Martinez to start hitting better if they are going to continue giving him P.T. going forward.

The Philadelphia Phillies release two veteran players

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 22 August 2011 at 10:07 am

The Phillies have released 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jack Cust and 32-year old righty reliever Aaron Heilman. Cust played in 6 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies and he was 5 for 20 (.250 avg, .848 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. His release surprised me a little bit as I think he could have helped the Phillies off the bench in September. Aaron Heilman pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies and he was 0-0 with a 8.38 ERA and a 2.07 WHIP. Heilman was quickly signed to a minor league deal by the Pirates.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Placido Polanco on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 17 August 2011 at 9:08 am

The Phillies have placed starting 3B Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list due to a sports hernia. Polanco has played in 89 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 95 for 345 (.275 avg, .672 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 4 homers, 40 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. 33-year old Wilson Valdez and 28-year old switch-hitting Michael Martinez will likely share time at 3B until Polanco is ready to return to action. Valdez has played in 75 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 47 for 199 (.236 avg, .578 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 0 homers, 17 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Martinez has played in 65 games so far this year for the Phillies and he is 32 or 151 (.212 avg, .551 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 2 homers, 19 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Hunter Pence has been electric for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 16 August 2011 at 5:26 pm

28-year old righty swinging RF Hunter Pence has been electric since coming over from the Astros in the big trade deadline deal. Pence has played in 14 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 18 for 55 (.327 avg, .926 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers and 11 RBIs. He has now played in 114 games for the Astros & Phillies so far this year and he is 141 for 454 (.311 avg, .840 OPS) with 56 runs scored, 14 homers, 73 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Adding Pence at the trade deadline was another great move for Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro. The Phillies are for sure the team to beat now.

Trevor May is starting to put things together in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 15 August 2011 at 11:14 am

21-year old righty starting pitcher Trevor May came into this season as the Phillies’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. May has pitched in 22 games (all starts) in A-ball so far this year and he is 9-6 with a 3.40 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. May has whiffed 164 batters and he has only allowed 100 hits in his first 124 1/3 innings so far this year and those are amazing numbers. But, he has walked 54 batters this year too, so he needs to tighten up his control a bit. May has now pitched in 70 games (65 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 26-16 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. May has whiffed a stunning 466 batters in his first 355 2/3 innings in the minors, as he has been overmatching batters in the minors when he throws strikes as his stuff is that good. The Phillies are probably really glad that the Astros didn’t ask for May in the Hunter Pence deal.
