Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 14 August 2011 at 1:20 pm

The Phillies have signed 31-year old righty starter/reliever Dave Bush to a minor league deal. Bush pitched in 17 games (3 starts) earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. He has now pitched in 210 games (187 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 56-69 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Bush will likely get a shot to help the Phillies’ bullpen when rosters expand on September 1st as long he gets off to a good start in the minors.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign outfielder Jack Cust

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 12 August 2011 at 6:10 pm

The Phillies have signed 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jack Cust to a minor league deal. Cust played in 67 games earlier this year for the Mariners and he was 48 for 225 (.213 avg, .673 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers and 23 RBIs. Cust has now played in 670 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 510 for 2,107 (.242 avg, .813 OPS) with 311 runs scored, 105 homers, 323 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Cust will likely try to get his timing down in the minors and get called up on September 1st when rosters expand. He could provide the Phillies with some lefty punch off the bench down the stretch.

Cliff Lee is on a roll in August for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 10 August 2011 at 3:39 pm

32-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee has started 2 games so far in August and he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. He has been a tad hot and cold so far this year for the Phillies. In his seven starts in June & August this season, Lee is 7-0 with a 0.15 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP! In his other 17 starts this year, Lee is 5-7 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Of course when you put the numbers togehter as a whole, they are still quite impressive. Lee has started 24 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 12-7 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He has only given up 153 hits and he has walked 34 batters in his first 172 innings so far this year. But the most impressive stat for Lee so far this year is his 177 whiffs. He has turned into a strikeout pitcher and he will easily set a new career high in strikeouts as his current high is 185 of them. The bottom line is that Lee has been great this year for the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Scott Mathieson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 6 August 2011 at 4:53 pm

The Phillies have designated 27-year old righty reliever Scott Mathieson for assignment. Mathieson pitched in 24 games (6 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 0-1 with 5 saves, a 2.92 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He also has pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year in which he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 2.40 WHIP. Mathieson has pitched in 15 games (8 starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP. The Phillies are trying to sneak Mathieson through waivers but they might not be lucky this time around.

UPDATE: (8/8/2011) - Mathieson has cleared waivers and has accepted a minor league assignment from the Phillies.

John Mayberry is on fire with the bat for the Philadelphia Phillies right now

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 6 August 2011 at 8:43 am

27-year old righty swinging outfielder John Mayberry has been really hitting the ball well lately. In July and August, Mayberry is 19 for 61 (.311 avg) with 8 runs scored, 6 homers, 19 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Mayberry has now played in 65 games so far this year for the Phillies and he is 43 for 165 (.261 avg, .825 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 9 homers, 31 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Mayberry has pushed Ben Francisco to the bench and maybe even AAA with the way he has played. Francisco has played in 80 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 47 for 213 (.221 avg, .677 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 6 homers, 31 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal Brian Bocock to the Pirates

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 2 August 2011 at 4:45 pm

The Phillies have dealt 26-year old righty swinging shortstop Brian Bocock to the Pirates, likely for cash considerations (probably around $20 bucks). Bocock played in 83 games in A+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 63 for 279 (.226 avg, .586 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 4 homers, 28 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Bocock played in 6 games last year for the Phillies and he was 0 for 5 (.000 avg) with 2 runs scored. This is absolutely no loss for the Phillies going forward.
