The Philadelphia Phillies sign Andres Blanco

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 31 March 2012 at 2:17 pm

The Phillies have signed 27-year old switch-hitting infielder Andres Blanco to a minor league deal. Blanco played in 36 games for the Rangers last year and he was 17 of 76 (.224 avg, .605 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 3 RBIs. Blanco has now played in 235 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 151 of 591 (.255 avg, .634 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 3 homers, 47 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Phillies have been collecting middle infielders as of late due to Chase Utley’s injury situation. Blanco can handle 2B and SS defensively.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Jose Contreras on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 31 March 2012 at 2:15 pm

The Phillies have placed 40-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26th due to an elbow issue. Contreras pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He has now pitched in 84 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 6-4 with 9 saves, a 3.44 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Contreras is ready to go early in the 2012 season, as the bullpen is a tad thin except at the back end of it.

The over/under for Philadelphia Phillies wins in 2012 is 93.5

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were A Betting Man by chinmusic on Friday 30 March 2012 at 7:56 pm

The over/under for Phillies wins in 2012 is 93.5. The Phillies were 102-60 last year. The Phillies decided to focus on improving the bullpen and the bench over the winter. For the pen, the Phillies brought in closer Jonathan Papelbon and righties Brian Sanches and Chad Qualls. For the bench, they brought in Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome, Juan Pierre and Laynce Nix. I think the Phillies are going to be o.k. even with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard likely both missing over a month to start the 2012 season. The Phillies still have an outstanding starting rotation and I think that will carry them to at least 94 wins, so I would take the over.

Charlie Manuel is still the man in charge for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Friday 30 March 2012 at 7:52 pm

68-year old manager Charlie Manuel is still in charge in the dugout for the Phillies. He led the Phillies to a 102-60 (63%) record during the regular season, but they then bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. Manuel now has a 648-488 (57%) record during the regular season in his first seven years with the Phillies. He is also 27-19 (58.7%) in the post-season for the Phillies and he led them to a World Series Championship back in 2008. Manuel now has a 866-678 (56.1%) record in his first 10 years during the regular season as a major league manager. He is also 29-22 (56.9%) during the post-season in his career.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal Matt Rizzotti to the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 30 March 2012 at 7:47 pm

The Phillies have dealt 26-year old lefty swinging 1B Matt Rizzotti to the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations. Rizzotti played in 139 games in AA-ball last year and he was 147 of 499 (.295 avg, .903 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 24 homers, 84 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He played in 534 games in his five years in the minors for the Phillies and he was 544 of 1,862 (.292 avg, .870 OPS) with 259 runs scored, 66 homers, 300 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The Phillies are loaded at 1B in the organization, so they essentially did Rizzotti a favor by dealing him to Minnesota….where he might get a chance to play in the near future.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 28 March 2012 at 2:18 pm

The Phillies have signed 28-year old righty swinging SS/2B Chin-lung Hu to a minor league deal. Hu played in 22 games for the Mets last year and he was 1 for 20 (.050 avg, .141 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 118 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 34 of 193 (.176 avg, .484 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 2 homers, 18 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Hu will likely start the 2012 season in AAA-ball for the Phillies.

UPDATE: (3/29/2012) - The Phillies have voided Chin-lung Hu’s minor league deal as he has failed his physical.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 28 March 2012 at 2:16 pm

He played for the Phillies back in 2006 when he appeared in 18 games in which he was 4 for 18 (.222 avg, .578 OPS) with 3 runs scored. Thurston has played in 184 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 76 of 337 (.226 avg, .629 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 1 homer, 27 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Hunter Pence is primed for a huge season in 2012 for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 25 March 2012 at 10:14 pm

28-year old righty swinging Hunter Pence is ready to rock for the Phillies in 2012. Pence played in 54 games for the Phillies last year and he was 67 of 207 (.324 avg, .954 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 11 homers, 35 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He played in 154 games overall for the Phillies & Astros last year and he was 190 of 606 (.314 avg, .871 OPS) with 84 runs scored, 22 homers, 97 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Pence has now played in 734 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 835 of 2,856 (.292 avg, .828 OPS) with 388 runs scored, 114 homers, 412 RBIs and 62 stolen bases. Pence played in 153 games in RF last year and he had 11 assists and 6 errors while showing off awful range there.

Laynce Nix will likely be the top backup in RF for the Phillies in 2012. Nix played in 12 error-free games in RF last year while showing off pretty good range and chalking up 1 assist.

24-year old lefty swinging Dominic Brown will start the 2012 season in AAA-ball. He played in 56 games for the Phillies last year and he was 45 of 184 (.245 avg, .725 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 5 homers, 19 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Brown has played in 91 games in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 58 of 246 (.236 avg, .696 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 7 homers, 32 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Brown had 4 errors and 0 assists in 52 games in RF for the Phillies last year while showing off pretty awful range there. The Phillies still like Brown for the future, but he needs to start playing better when they give him a chance to play.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE RF IN 2012: A

The Philadelphia Phillies are expecting another solid year out of Shane Victorino in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 25 March 2012 at 9:57 pm

The Phillies are expecting big things from 31-year old switch-hitting Shane Victorino in 2012. He played in 132 games for the Phillies last year and he was 145 of 519 (.279 avg, .847 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 17 homers, 61 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Victorino has now played in 886 games in his first seven years with the Phillies and he is 897 of 3,184 (.282 avg, .791 OPS) with 536 runs scored, 79 homers, 350 RBIs and 155 stolen bases. He played in 130 games in CF last year for the Phillies but he didn’t have any errors or assists. But, he showed poor range in CF.

Laynce Nix will likely be the top backup in CF for the Phillies in 2012. He played in 4 error-free games in CF for the Nationals last year. Scott Podsednik or Juan Pierre could play CF if need be for the Phillies, but they would be sub-par defenders there.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE CF IN 2012: B

John Mayberry could get his big shot for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 25 March 2012 at 9:53 pm

28-year old righty swinging John Mayberry looks like he’s going to be the Phillies’ starting LF on Opening Day. How long he keeps the job will be up to him. Mayberry played in 104 games for the Phillies last year and he was 73 of 267 (.273 avg, .854 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 15 homers, 49 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has now played in 154 games in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 89 of 336 (.265 avg, .846 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 21 homers, 63 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Mayberry played in 21 error-free games in LF last year for the Phillies with 1 assist while showing poor range. Mayberry has the look of a late bloomer with big time power.

31-year old lefty swinging Laynce Nix is going to make the Phillies’ roster and he could work his way into a platoon with Mayberry. Nix played in 124 games for the Nationals last year and he was 81 of 324 (.250 avg, .750 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 16 homers, 44 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. In his first nine years in the majors, Nix has played in 607 games in which he is 409 of 1,673 (.244 avg, .718 OPS) with 211 runs scored, 64 homers, 226 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Nix played in 73 games in LF last year for the Nationals and he had 6 assists and 2 errors while showing below average range.

34-year old lefty swinging Juan Pierre is also likely to make the Phillies as a bench player. He played in 158 games for the White Sox last year and he was 178 of 639 (.279 avg, .657 OPS) with 80 runs scored, 2 homers, 50 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. Pierre has now played in 1,751 games in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 2,020 of 6,823 (.296 avg, .708 OPS) with 980 runs scored, 16 homers, 484 RBIs and 554 stolen bases. Pierre had 7 errors and 5 assists in 155 games in LF for the White Sox last year while showing below average range. Pierre is still a solid baseball player and he will help the Phillies off the bench in 2012.

36-year old lefty swinging Scott Podsednik is trying to win a job on the Phillies’ bench and get his career back on the right path. He played in 34 games in Rookie+A+AAA-ball last year and he was 34 for 134 (.254 avg, .735 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 0 homers, 8 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Podsednik last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Dodgers & Royals. Podsednik has played in 1,016 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 1,036 of 3,707 (.279 avg, .721 OPS) with 544 runs scored, 41 homers, 300 RBIs and 301 stolen bases.
