36-year old righty swinging 3B Placido Polanco is starting to get a little brittle in his old age. He played in 122 games for the Phillies last year and he was 130 of 469 (.277 avg, .674 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 5 homers, 50 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Polanco has now played in 598 games in his first six years with the Phillies and he is 698 of 2,382 (.293 avg, .753 OPS) with 337 runs scored, 49 homers, 262 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Polanco has played in 1,719 games in his first 14 years in the majors and he is 1,966 of 6,534 (.301 avg, .752 OPS) with 948 runs scored, 101 homers, 681 RBIs and 79 stolen bases. Polanco only had 8 errors in 118 games at 3B while showing out of this world range. Polanco is still a good all-around 3B when he’s healthy.

34-year old righty swinging Ty Wigginton will be the Phillies’ top backup 3B in 2012. He played in 68 games for the Rockies at 3B last year and he had 4 errors while showing awful range. Wigginton has more power than Polanco, but he’s nowhere near as good of a contact hitter or defensive 3B.
