Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 30 May 2012 at 7:51 am

The Phillies have placed 35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained lat muscle, but he’s going to miss the next 6-8 weeks. Halladay has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He has now pitched in 76 games (all starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 44-21 with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. This is a huge blow to the Phillies as Halladay is going to be impossible to replace.

34-year old lefty reliever Raul Valdes has been electric for the Phillies so far this year. He has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.55 WHIP. He has only given up 3 hits in his first 7 1/3 innings for the Phillies while whiffing 10 batters and walking only 1. The Phillies hope that Valdes keeps up the good work, that way he can team with Antonio Bastardo to give them a nasty pair of lefties out of the pen.

Carlos Ruiz is on fire with the bat for the Philadelphia Phillies this year

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 18 May 2012 at 12:06 pm

33-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Ruiz is ripping the ball so far this year for the Phillies. Ruiz has played in 35 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 41 for 113 (.363 avg, 1.024 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 7 homers, 27 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Ruiz has only walked 8 times this year, but he has only whiffed 12 times. So he is swinging at a lot of pitches and he’s hitting them really hard. Ruiz has career highs of 49 runs scored, 9 homers and 54 RBIs in his major league career and he’s likely to smash those numbers as long as he can stay healthy.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation is keeping them afloat

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 18 May 2012 at 12:02 pm

The Phillies are having a hard time scoring runs, but the starting pitchers are keeping them afloat so far this year. The Phillies have a nice mix of righties (Roy Halladay, Joe Blanton and Vance Worley) and lefties (Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels) in the starting rotation. Roy Halladay is still the horse of this pitching staff, as he expects to go nine innings every time he starts. Halladay has started 9 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 4-3 with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Cliff Lee has missed a couple of starts due to injury, but he has been outstanding this year for the Phillies. Lee has started 5 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 1.95 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP. Cole Hamels is in his free agent walk year and he’s looking to break the bank with the way he is pitching so far this year. Hamels has started 7 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Vance Worley is the youngest member of the Phillies’ starting rotation and he’s looking good so far this year. Worley has started 7 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The biggest surprise for the Phillies has been Joe Blanton, who is healthy and pitching well. Blanton has pitched in 8 games (7 starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. If the Phillies ever start scoring some runs, they could go on a very nice run in 2012.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Kyle Hudson from the Rays

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 May 2012 at 12:25 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Kyle Hudson from the Tampa Bay Rays for 33-year old lefty swinging outfielder Rich Thompson. Hudson played in 31 games for the Rays in AAA-ball this year and he was 32 for 110 (.291 avg, .696 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 0 homers, 8 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He played in 14 games in his first taste of the majors last year with the Orioles and he was 4 for 28 (.143 avg, .286 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Thompson played in 29 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 27 of 88 (.307 avg, .788 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 0 homers, 11 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. I like the Phillies’ end of this deal as Hudson has a lot more tread left on his tires.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 May 2012 at 12:21 pm

The Phillies have placed 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vance Worley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12th due to right elbow inflammation. Kendrick has pitched in 8 games (3 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-3 with a 7.32 ERA and a 2.03 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Kendrick gets back to being the pitcher he was last season, when he was a huge asset for them.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal Scott Podsednik to the Red Sox

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 12 May 2012 at 8:03 am

The Phillies have dealt 36-year old lefty swinging outfielder Scott Podsednik to the Red Sox for cash considerations. Podsednik played in 22 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 15 for 74 (.203 avg, .505 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The Phillies are pretty well stocked with outfielders, so this deal made sense. Essentially, the Phillies did Podsednik a favor as they likely didn’t get much cash for him.

Jake Diekman is getting his first shot at the show for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 11 May 2012 at 7:48 pm

The Phillies have called up 25-year old lefty reliever Jake Diekman for his first shot in the majors. He gave up 13 hits in 15 1/3 innings while whiffing 22 batters and walking only 3….and those are awesome numbers. Diekman has now pitched in 183 games (39 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 12-16 with 10 saves, a 3.78 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Laynce Nix on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 11 May 2012 at 5:08 pm

The Phillies have placed 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Laynce Nix on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 10th, due to a strained right calf. Nix has played in 22 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 15 for 46 (.326 avg, .979 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. This is a big loss for the Phillies as Nix was giving them a lethal lefty bat off the bench. They hope he only misses a couple of weeks.
