The Philadelphia Phillies need bullpen help badly

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were the GM by chinmusic on Thursday 28 June 2012 at 5:04 pm

The Phillies need bullpen help really badly. The Phillies are 36-42 on the season, which has them in last place in the N.L. East….9.5 games behind the Nationals. The Phillies will likely be targeting both pitchers that can set-up Jonathan Papelbon (Matt Capps, Brandon League and Grant Balfour. They also will likely be targeting righties like Brandon Lyon, Shawn Camp and Matt Belisle as they need help up and down the pen from the right side. With Chase Utley back and Ryan Howard on rehab, the Phillies aren’t ready to become sellers….but they can’t afford to wait too much longer to add bullpen help.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Chad Qualls

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Thursday 28 June 2012 at 11:58 am

The Phillies have designated 33-year old righty reliever Chad Qualls for assignment. Qualls pitched in 35 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 26-year old lefty reliever Jeremy Horst to replace Qualls in the bullpen. Horst pitched in 26 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 2-1 with 2 saves, a 2.11 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. His only major league experience came last season with the Reds. He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Reds last year and he was 0-0 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.

UPDATE: (7/2/2012) – The Phillies have dealt Chad Qualls to the New York Yankees for cash considerations.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Brian Schneider on the D.L.

Blogged under Blast from the Past,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 25 June 2012 at 6:36 pm

The Phillies have placed 35-year old lefty swinging catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained ankle. Schneider has played in 26 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 16 for 69 (.232 avg, .656 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. 31-year old righty swinging Erik Kratz has been called up to replace Schneider as Carlos Ruiz’ backup. Kratz played in 5 games for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 1 for 4 (.250 avg, 1.250 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI. Kratz has now played in 16 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 7 for 44 (.159 avg, .446 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs.

UPDATE: (6/26/2012) – The Phillies will be without Brian Schneider for the next 3-5 weeks.

Cliff Lee is pitching well for the Philadelphia Phillies, but he has nothing to show for it

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 25 June 2012 at 1:20 pm

33-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee has been rock solid this year, but he’s not getting much help from the rest of the team. Lee has pitched in 12 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-4 with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. He has only given up 79 hits and 17 walks in his first 84 2/3 innings this year with 86 strikeouts, which is pretty darn impressive. He doesn’t have any wins, because the offense isn’t helping him much. Lee has been supported with 6 or more runs only twice so far this year. The Phillies have scored 2 or fewer runs five times so far this year with Lee pitching and they have also scored 3-5 runs five times when Lee was on the mound. Lee has now pitched in 56 games (all starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 24-16 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Hopefully the Phillies start scoring runs more often for Lee in the near future, because it’s amazing to me that he has yet to win a game this year, despite pitching pretty well.

Tyler Cloyd has been really impressive in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies this year

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 21 June 2012 at 9:22 am

25-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd has pitched in 14 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball so far this year and he is 10-1 with a 2.21 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. He has now pitched in 123 games (80 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 43-22 with a 3.40 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Cloyd could get his first shot at the show in 2012 with the Phillies if the need arises for another starting pitcher in the near future.

The Philadelphia Phillies lose David Herndon to Tommy John Surgery

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 19 June 2012 at 7:20 pm

The Phillies have lost 26-year old righty reliever David Herndon for the rest of the 2012 season and probably the first half of the 2013 season, as he had Tommy John Surgery earlier today. Herndon pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He has now pitched in 97 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 2-8 with 1 save, a 3.85 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Jason Pridie

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Friday 15 June 2012 at 4:53 pm

The Phillies have signed 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jason Pridie to a minor league deal. Pridie has not played at all so far this year as he just finished serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a drug of abuse. Pridie played in 101 games for the Mets last year and he was 48 for 208 (.231 avg, .679 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He has now played in 112 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 48 for 212 (.226 avg, .670 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.

Jim Thome has caught fire with the bat since coming off the D.L. for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Friday 15 June 2012 at 9:38 am

41-year old 1B/DH Jim Thome came off the D.L. at the right time, with the Phillies playing interleague road games. He has played in 8 games so far in June for the Phillies and he is 11 for 26 (.423 avg, 1.346 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers and 13 RBIs. Thome has now played in 20 games overall this year for the Phillies and he is 13 of 44 (.295 avg, .938 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 homers and 13 RBIs. The Phillies hope that Thome keeps up the hot bat when he returns to coming off the bench when they start playing at home against A.L. teams and when they start playing N.L. games again.

Juan Pierre keeps rolling along for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 12 June 2012 at 12:57 pm

34-year old lefty swinging LF Juan Pierre has taken over as a starter for the Phillies. He has played in 54 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 58 for 180 (.322 avg, .732 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 0 homers, 12 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Pierre is currently MLB’s active stolen base leader (565 of them) and he is also #24 in major league history overall in stolen bases. The Phillies hope that Pierre keeps up the good work, because they are still having issues scoring runs.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed Freddy Galvis on the 15-day disabled list

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 7 June 2012 at 4:48 pm

The Phillies have placed 22-year old switch-hitting 2B Freddy Galvis on the 15-day disabled list due to a lower back strain. Galvis has played in 58 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 43 for 190 (.226 avg, .617 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 24 RBIs. Galvis has been hacking at the plate so far this year as he has walked only 7 times while whiffing 29 times already this year. 31-year old lefty swinging Mike Fontenot will likely replace him in the starting lineup. Fontenot has now played in 17 games for the Phillies this year and he is 12 for 29 (.414 avg, .948 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.

UPDATE: (6/19/2012) – Freddy Galvis has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for steroids. He can serve the suspension while he’s on the D.L., which is convenient. Galvis actually has a fracture in his lower back, so he will likely spend his whole suspension on the D.L.
