The Philadelphia Phillies release Dave Bush

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 6 June 2012 at 12:37 pm

The Phillies have released 32-year old righty starting pitcher Dave Bush (he technically opted out of his minor league deal to sign with a team in Korea). Bush pitched in 11 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 4-3 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He has pitched in 210 games (187 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 56-69 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Bush lost his patience with the Phillies, but he likely would have gotten a shot at some point in 2012 with them.

Kyle Kendrick is stepping up for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 4 June 2012 at 10:41 am

27-year old righty starter/reliever Kyle Kendrick is by far the best #6 starter in all of baseball. His season started slowly in April when he pitched in 6 games (2 starts) for the Phillies in which he was 0-2 with a 6.59 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. But, he has really stepped up so far in May and June, pitching in 6 games (5 starts) in which he is 2-2 with a 2.97 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Kendrick has now pitched in 12 games (7 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-4 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. The Phillies need Kendrick to keep up the good work as he is essentially replacing Roy Halladay in the starting rotation.

Jiwan James is having a tough year in AA for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 2 June 2012 at 4:38 pm

23-year old switch-hitting outfielder Jiwan James came into this season as the Phillies’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America. James has played in 47 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 40 for 161 (.248 avg, .680 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and only 3 stolen bases. He has now played in 349 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 363 for 1,364 (.266 avg, .689 OPS) with 195 runs scored, 14 homers, 135 RBIs and 74 stolen bases. The Phillies are going to likely take things slowly with James as he has converted to the outfielder after injuring his elbow as a pitcher early on in his minor league career.

The Philadelphia Phillies lose Jose Contreras for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 2 June 2012 at 4:32 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have lost 40-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras for the rest of the season due to a UCL and flexor tear in his right elbow. Contreras pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He likely has thrown his last pitch for the Phillies, as they are not expected to pick up his option for the 2013 season. Contreras pitched in 101 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Phillies and he is 7-4 with 9 saves, a 3.74 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 26-year old righty reliever Michael Schwimer to replace Contreras in the bullpen. Schwimer pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP. Schwimer has now pitched in 17 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Schwimer is better for them this time around.

Curt Schilling was a pretty solid pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Blast from the Past, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 1 June 2012 at 12:09 pm

Righty starting pitcher Curt Schilling had a nice run with the Philadelphia Phillies. He pitched in 242 games (226 starts) in his nine years with the Phillies and he was 101-78 with 2 saves, a 3.35 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He broke onto the scene with the Phillies in 1992. Schilling pitched in 42 games (26 starts) for the Phillies in 1992 and he was 14-11 with a 2.35 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. Schilling’s best season with the Phillies came in 1997 when he finished 4th in the N.L. Cy Young Award Voting. Schilling pitched in 35 games (all starts) in 1997 and he was 17-11 with a 2.97 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. Schilling whiffed 319 batters and he only gave up 208 hits in 254 1/3 innings in 1997! Schilling was an N.L All-Star three times in his nine years with the Phillies. Schilling is #6 in games started (226), #6 in wins (101), #6 in WHIP (1.12), #8 in innings pitched (1,659 1/3) and #4 in strikeouts (1,554) in Phillies’ history.
