The Phillies have dealt 41-year old lefty swinging 1B/DH Jim Thome to the Baltimore Orioles for 21-year old righty starter/reliever Kyle Simon and 19-year old righty swinging catcher Gabriel Lino. Thome played in 30 games for the Phillies this year and he was 15 of 62 (.242 avg, .854 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers and 15 RBIs. Thome played in 391 games in his four years with the Phillies and he was 348 of 1,341 (.260 avg, .925 OPS) with 243 runs scored, 101 homers and 281 RBIs. He is going to take over as the Orioles’ full-time DH.
Kyle Simon came into this season as the Orioles’ #18 prospect according to Baseball America. Simon pitched in 14 games (all starts) in A-ball for the Orioles this year and he was 2-8 with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. He has pitched in 28 games (14 starts) in his first two years in the minors and he is 3-10 with 1 save, a 3.63 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Gabriel Lino came into this season as the O’s #21 prospect according to Baseball America. Lino played in 56 games in A-ball for the O’s this year and he was 45 of 206 (.218 avg, .622 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 4 homers, 18 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 138 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 95 of 424 (.224 avg, .666 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 6 homers, 48 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.
The Phillies did well in this deal as Jim Thome is getting up there in years. Simon and Lino are having rough years, but they are legit prospects.
