Roy Halladay has looked like his old self for the Philadelphia Phillies in August

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 30 August 2012 at 9:32 am

35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay has been rock solid so far in August for the Phillies. Halladay has started 5 games so far in August and he is 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He has only given up 28 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 29 batters in his 36 innings this month for the Phillies. Halladay has now pitched in 19 games (all starts) for the Phillies overall this year and he is 8-7 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. It’s nice to see Halladay pitching well and the Phillies hope he finishes the year strongly.

The Philadelphia Phillies shut down Vance Worley for the rest of the 2012 season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 29 August 2012 at 4:50 pm

The Phillies have placed 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vance Worley on the 15-day disabled list due to a right elbow injury that will require season ending surgery. Worley pitched in 23 games (all starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 25-year old righty Tyler Cloyd to replace Worley in the starting rotation. This will be his first taste of the majors. Cloyd pitched in 26 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He has pitched in 135 games (92 starts) in his five years in the minors and he is 48-22 with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

He has only given up 48 hits and 23 walks in 65 1/3 innings in the minors while whiffing 65 batters in the minors, which is impressive. Knigge has now pitched in 106 games (4 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 8-8 with 15 saves, a 2.96 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. He might get his first shot at the majors in September when rosters expand.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 25 August 2012 at 5:42 pm

The Phillies have placed 35-year old lefty swinging catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hamstring. He has played in 34 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 20 for 89 (.225 avg, .637 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 7 RBIs. The Phillies have called up 27-year old lefty swinging catcher Steven Lerud to back up Erik Kratz. Lerud has played in 35 games in AA-ball this year and he is 24 of 102 (.235 avg, .654 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers and 7 RBIs. Lerud has now played in 685 games in his first 9 years in the minors and he is 497 of 2,244 (.221 avg, .664 OPS) with 254 runs scored, 53 homers, 277 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Cliff Lee has gotten little luck this year for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2012 at 9:43 am

33-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee hasn’t been getting much help from his teammates this year. He has started 22 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-7 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He has given up 156 hits (22 homers) and walked 25 batters in his first 154 2/3 innings for the Phillies this year while whiffing 151 batters. Lee has now pitched in 66 games (all starts) for the Phillies in his three years with the team and he is 26-19 with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. It’s amazing to me that Lee only has 2 wins this year based on how well he has pitched.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Ryan O’Sullivan from the Dodgers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 16 August 2012 at 3:22 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired 21-year old righty reliever/starter Ryan O’Sullivan from the Dodgers to complete the Joe Blanton deal. O’Sullivan came into this season as the Dodgers’ #23 prospect according to Baseball America. He pitched in 29 games (9 starts) in A+AA-ball this year and he was 8-6 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. O’Sullivan has now pitched in 32 games (12 starts) in his first two years in the minors and he is 8-7 with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. This was a pretty good get for the Phillies, as O’Sullivan has a nice upside.

The Philadelphia Phillies have a couple of guys really stepping up

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 14 August 2012 at 8:22 am

With Carlos Ruiz and Placido Polanco out of action due to injuries, opportunities arose for P.T. for 32-year old righty swinging catcher Erik Kratz and 30-year old righty swinging 3B Kevin Frandsen and they are taking full advantage so far. Kratz has played in 21 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 15 of 48 (.313 avg, 1.132 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 5 homers and 13 RBIs. Ruiz is going to be out a while, so the Phillies need Kratz to keep hitting well. Frandsen has played in 14 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 17 of 51 (.333 avg, .782 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. Frandsen has only whiffed 2 and walked twice for the Phillies, so he has been swinging at everything. Placido Polanco is likely to return later this week, but Frandsen likely has secured a backup spot with the Phillies.

27-year old righty starter/reliever Kyle Kendrick has pitched well lately, which is good news for the Phillies, as he will be needed to replace Joe Blanton (traded to the Dodgers) in the starting rotation. Kendrick has pitched in 9 games (2 starts) since July 1st, in which he is 2-1 with a 0.95 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.
