The Philadelphia Phillies sign C/1B Jake Fox

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 5 August 2012 at 12:05 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed 30-year old righty swinging C/1B Jake Fox. Fox played in 63 games in Independent ball and in AAA-ball for the Pirates this year and he is 60 for 203 (.296 avg, .875 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 9 homers and 36 RBIs. He has played in 193 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 116 of 489 (.237 avg, .714 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 20 homers and 73 RBIs. Fox could help the Phillies in the near future.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Carlos Ruiz on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 4 August 2012 at 4:12 pm

The Phillies have placed 33-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list due to a case of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Ruiz has played in 95 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 105 of 313 (.335 avg, .959 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. 35-year old lefty swinging Brian Schneider and 32-year old righty swinging Erik Kratz will likely platoon behind the plate until Ruiz is ready to return to action. Schneider has played in 27 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 16 of 70 (.229 avg, .665 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. Kratz has played in 13 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 8 for 23 (.348 avg, 1.245 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 3 homers and 6 RBIs. This is another huge blow to the Phillies as Carlos Ruiz was having by far the best season of his major league career in 2012.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal Joe Blanton to the Dodgers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 4 August 2012 at 4:07 pm

The Phillies have dealt 31-year old righty starting pitcher Joe Blanton to the Los Angeles Dodgers for either a player to be named later or cash considerations. Blanton pitched in 21 games (20 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 8-9 with a 4.59 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He pitched in 105 games (100 starts) in his first five years with the Phillies and he was 34-25 with a 4.47 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. This was not a surprising move as the Phillies really tried to deal Blanton to the Orioles at the trade deadline, but they couldn’t agree on the compensation.

The Philadelphia Phillies need John Mayberry to step up

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Friday 3 August 2012 at 11:20 am

With the Phillies dealing off Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence, they need some outfielders to step up. #1 on that list is 28-year old righty swinging John Mayberry. Mayberry has played in 95 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 58 of 250 (.232 avg, .656 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 8 homers, 25 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Mayberry has now played in 249 games in his first four years with the Phillies and he is 147 of 586 (.251 avg, .765 OPS) with 77 runs scored, 29 homers, 88 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. The Phillies had high expectations for Mayberry coming into this season, so they hope he steps up.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Brian Sanches

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 3 August 2012 at 11:15 am

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 33-year old righty reliever Brian Sanches. Sanches pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA and a 2.37 WHIP. He also pitched in 25 games (1 start) in AAA-ball this year and he was 3-2 with a 2.50 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Maybe the Phillies should have given Sanches another shot as he was quickly picked up by the Houston Astros.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Mike Fontenot

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 1 August 2012 at 2:58 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated 32-year old lefty swinging infiedler Mike Fontenot for assignment. Fontenot played in 47 games for the Phillies this year and he was 28 of 97 (.289 avg, .683 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. He has now played in 582 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 374 of 1,413 (.265 avg, .734 OPS) with 175 runs scored, 27 homers, 163 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Fontenot might not clear waivers as he has been a solid back up player for the Phillies. I really don’t like this move as Fontenot could have helped them the rest of this year.

UPDATE: (8/5/2012) - The Phillies have released Mike Fontenot.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to the Blue Jays

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 1 August 2012 at 8:59 am

The Phillies have dealt 28-year old righty swinging catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to the Blue Jays for cash considerations. Gosewisch played in 65 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he is 41 of 213 (.192 avg, .551 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 4 homers and 20 RBIs. He played in 646 games in his first eight years in the minors for the Phillies and he was 502 of 2,165 (.232 avg, .659 OPS) with 255 runs scored, 44 homers, 262 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. This is no loss for the Phillies going forward.
