32-year old lefty swinging 1B Ryan Howard is done for the season after dropping a warmup bat, breaking his toe last night. Howard had a lost season as he had a very late start as he was rehabbing from Achilles surgery. Howard played in 71 games for the Phillies this year and he was 57 for 260 (.219 avg, .718 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 14 homers and 56 RBIs. 26-year old rookie righty swinging Darin Ruf will likely start the last four games this year for the Phillies at 1B. He has played in 8 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 7 for 21 (.333 avg, .889 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire 2B Stefan Jarrin from the Dodgers

The Phillies have acquired 22-year old righty swinging 2B Stefan Jarrin from the Dodgers to complete the Joe Blanton deal. Jarrin played in 26 games in Rookie ball last year and he was 19 for 91 (.209 avg, .667 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 49 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 32 for 152 (.211 avg, .644 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 3 homers, 16 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Well, it doesn’t look like the Phillies got much for Blanton.

35-year old lefty swinging outfielder Juan Pierre couldn’t find a job last winter and he decided to sign a minor league deal with the Phillies. He earned the starting job in LF and he has not looked back. Pierre has played in 125 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 120 of 383 (.313 avg, .735 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 1 homer, 25 RBIs and 35 stolen bases. He has been red hot in September, helping the Phillies make a late Wild Card run. Pierre has played in 15 games so far in September and he is 20 for 49 (.408 avg, .943 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Cliff Lee has been rock solid in September for the Philadelphia Phillies

34-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee is on fire for the Phillies so far in September. Lee has started 4 games so far this month and he is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. He has given up 24 hits and walked 3 batters while whiffing 28 batters in his first 28 1/3 innings this month, as he has been impressive. Lee has now pitched in 27 games (all starts) for the Phillies overall this year and he is 6-7 with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. The Phillies are going to need Lee to stay hot if they are going to make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

28-year old righty swinging outfielder John Mayberry has been ripping the ball lately for the Phillies. Since August 1st, Mayberry has played in 37 games in which he is 38 for 131 (.290 avg) with 18 runs scored, 6 homers and 16 RBIs. He has now played in 130 games for the Phillies this year and he is 95 of 374 (.254 avg, .731 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 14 homers, 41 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Phillies need Mayberry to keep up the good work if they are going to make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card.

Kevin Frandsen is going to try to play through a stress fracture for the Philadelphia Phillies

30-year old righty swinging infielder Kevin Frandsen is going to try to play through a stress fracture in his left fibula the rest of the season, if he can take the pain. Frandsen has played in 35 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 44 for 129 (.341 avg, .792 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 1 homer and 9 RBIs. The Phillies are going to have to watch Frandsen’s P.T. the rest of the season so he doesn’t hurt himself any worse.

The Phillies have placed 34-year old lefty reliever on the 15-day disabled list, but, he’s going to miss the rest of the 2012 season due to surgery on his right knee. Valdes pitched in 27 games (1 start) for the Phillies this year and he was 3-2 with a 2.90 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP. He only gave up 18 hits and 5 walks while whiffing 35 batters in only 31 innings and he was impressive this year for the Phillies. Valdes has now pitched in 78 games (2 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 6-6 with 1 save, a 4.07 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Based on the way he pitched for the Phillies this year, they should try to re-sign him over the winter.

Polanco has played in 90 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 78 of 303 (.257 avg, .629 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 2 homers and 19 RBIs. The Phillies will keep going with 30-year old righty swinging Kevin Frandsen as their starting 3B going forward. He has played in 34 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 43 of 128 (.336 avg, .782 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.

Brown has played in 31 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 24 of 101 (.238 avg, .649 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 1 homer and 12 RBIs. He has now played in 122 games in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 82 of 347 (.236 avg, .683 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 8 homers, 44 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Brown needs a strong September to get back in the good graces of the Phillies’ organization.
