The Philadelphia Phillies sign John Lannan

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 17 December 2012 at 1:17 pm

The Phillies have signed 28-year old lefty starting pitcher John Lannan to a 1-year, $2.5 million dollar deal. Lannan pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Nationals last year and he was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He has now pitched in 134 games (all starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Lannan will likely be the #5 starter for the Phillies in 2013, and I think he will be a solid one. This was a good pickup for the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Mike Adams

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 17 December 2012 at 1:15 pm

The Phillies have signed 34-year old righty reliever Mike Adams to a 2-year, $14 million dollar deal. Adams pitched in 61 games (0 starts) for the Rangers last year and he was 5-3 with 1 save, a 3.27 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He has now pitched in 358 games (0 starts) in his first eight years in the majors and he is 18-15 with 4 saves, a 2.28 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Adams will become Jonathan Papelbon’s new set-up man. I really like this pickup for the Phillies as Adams is a pretty darn good pitcher.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 14 December 2012 at 3:59 pm

The Phillies have claimed 23-year old lefty reliever/starter Mauricio Robles off waivers from the Mariners. He pitched in 43 games (6 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year for the Mariners and he was 2-5 with a 5.78 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. Robles has now pitched in 156 games (97 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he was 31-35 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Robles will likely start the 2013 season in AAA-ball for the Phillies.

He last played in the majors back in 2011 with the Rangers. He has now played in 235 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 151 of 591 (.255 avg, .634 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 3 homers, 47 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Blanco will likely start the 2013 season in AAA-ball for the Phillies.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 14 December 2012 at 8:59 am

The Phillies have signed 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jermaine Mitchell to a minor league deal. He played in 108 games in AAA-ball for the A’s last year and he was 103 of 409 (.252 avg, .731 OPS) with 75 runs scored, 6 homers, 38 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. Mitchell has now played in 753 games in his first seven years in the minors and he is 792 of 2,822 (.281 avg, .803 OPS) with 495 runs scored, 55 homers, 325 RBIs and 144 stolen bases. Mitchell will get a shot to win a bench job for the Phillies next spring.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire 3B Michael Young from the Rangers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trades by chinmusic on Saturday 8 December 2012 at 4:15 pm

The Phillies have acquired 36-year old righty swinging 3B Michael Young and cash from the Texas Rangers for 25-year old righty reliever Josh Lindblom and 22-year old righty reliever/starter Lisalverto Bonilla. Young played in 156 games for the Rangers last year and he was 169 of 611 (.277 avg, .682 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 8 homers, 67 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,823 games in his first 13 years in the majors and he is 2,230 of 7,399 (.301 avg, .791 OPS) with 1,085 runs scored, 177 homers, 984 RBIs and 89 stolen bases. Young will take over as the Phillies’ starting 3B in 2013 and he might really benefit from a change in leagues as he can still rip fastballs. Josh Lindblom was part of the return from the Dodgers in the Shane Victorino deal last July. He pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 1-3 with 1 save, a 4.63 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Lisalverto Bonilla was the Phillies’ #12 prospect when the 2012 season started according to Baseball America. Bonilla pitched in 31 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball for the Phillies last year and he was 3-2 with 4 saves, a 1.55 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. The Phillies paid a lot for Young (just like they did for Revere), so they better hope he has something left in the gas tank.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Cesar Jimenez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 6 December 2012 at 7:45 pm

The Phillies have signed 28-year old lefty reliever Cesar Jimenez to a minor league deal. Jimenez pitched in 26 games (0 starts) in Rookie+AAA-ball for the Mariners last year and he was 2-2 with a 5.24 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors back in 2011 with the Mariners. Jimenez has pitched in 43 games (3 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Jimenez will get a shot to win a job in the bullpen this spring, but he will be a longshot.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Zach Miner

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 6 December 2012 at 7:42 pm

The Phillies have signed 30-year old righty reliever/starter Zach Miner to a minor league deal. Miner pitched in 27 games (3 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Tigers last year and he was 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. Miner last pitched in the majors in 2009 with the Tigers. Miner has pitched in 157 games (35 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 25-20 with 1 save, a 4.24 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. If he’s healthy, Miner could help the Phillies out of the bullpen in 2013.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Ben Revere from the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trades by chinmusic on Thursday 6 December 2012 at 7:39 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired 24-year old lefty swinging CF Ben Revere from the Twins for 25-year old righty starting pitcher Vance Worley and 23-year old righty starting pitcher Trevor May. Revere played in 124 games for the Twins last year and he was 150 of 511 (.294 avg, .675 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 0 homers, 32 RBIs and 40 stolen bases. He has now played in 254 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 275 of 989 (.278 avg, .642 OPS) with 127 runs scored, 0 homers, 64 RBIs and 74 stolen bases. Revere will take over as the Phillies’ starting CF and leadoff hitter. Vance Worley pitched in 23 games (all starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Worley pitched in 53 games (46 starts) in his three years with the Phillies and he was 18-13 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Trevor May came into the 2012 season as the Phillies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America. May pitched in 28 games (all starts) in AA-ball last year and he was 10-13 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Revere didn’t come cheap to the Phillies, but he is going to really upgrade the team in 2013 and beyond, both offensively and defensively.

The Philadelphia Phillies non-tender outfielder Nate Schierholtz

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 1 December 2012 at 8:41 am

The Phillies decided not to tender 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Nate Schierholtz a contract for the 2013 season, making him a free agent. Schierholtz played in 37 games for the Phillies last year and he was 18 of 66 (.273 avg, .698 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. He played in 114 games overall last year for the Phillies and Giants and he was 62 of 241 (.257 avg, .728 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 6 homers, 21 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Phillies shouldn’t miss Schierholtz too much in 2013, but at the same time, he won’t have a hard time finding a new job this winter.
