The Philadelphia Phillies hope that Delmon Young is ready for the start of the season

27-year old righty swinging Delmon Young is penciled in as the starting RF heading into spring training.  He is dealing with an ankle injury right now, which could cause him to start the 2013 season on the D.L.  Young played in 151 games for the Tigers last year and he was 153 of 574 (.267 avg, .707 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 18 homers and 74 RBIs.  Young didn’t play at all in RF for the Tigers last year and he was their primary DH.  He played in 31 games (29 starts) in LF last year for the Tigers and he had 1 assist and 2 errors there while showing poor range. Young has now played in 880 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 955 of 3,358 (.284 avg, .742 OPS) with 396 runs scored, 89 homers, 482 RBIs and 34 stolen bases.  32-year old lefty swinging Laynce Nix could also see time in RF for the Phillies in 2013.  He played in 70 games for the Phillies last year and he was 28 of 114 (.246 avg, .727 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers and 16 RBIs.  He played in 10 games (7 starts) in RF for the Phillies last year and he had 0 assists or errors there while showing poor range.  Nix has now played in 677 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 437 of 1,787 (.245 avg, .719 OPS) with 224 runs scored, 67 homers, 242 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  30-year old righty swinging Joe Mather could also get some P.T. for the Phillies in RF in 2013.  Mather played in 103 games for the Cubs last year and he was 47 of 225 (.209 avg, .581 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 5 homers, 19 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Mather played in 14 games (4 starts) in RF for the Cubs last year and he had 0 assists or errors there while showing poor range.  Mather has now played in 229 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 108 of 493 (.219 avg, .628 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 14 homers, 49 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.

Ben Revere is going to be the man in CF for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013

24-year lefty swinging Ben Revere will be the new starting CF for the Phillies in 2013.  He is a like a lot younger Juan Pierre, who is much better defensively.  Revere played in 124 games for the Twins last year and he was 150 of 511 (.294 avg, .675 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 0 homers, 32 RBIs and 40 stolen bases.  Revere played in 39 games (34 starts) in CF for the Twins last year and he had 2 assists and 0 errors there while showing good range.  Revere has now played in 254 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 275 of 989 (.278 avg, .642 OPS) with 127 runs scored, 0 homers, 64 RBIs and 74 stolen bases.  Domonic Brown, John Mayberry and Joe Mather can also play CF if needed in 2013.  Brown played in 38 games (all starts) in CF for the Phillies last year and he had 4 assists and 0 errors there while showing poor range.  Mayberry played in 58 games (52 starts) in CF for the Phillies last year and he had 2 assists and 1 error there while showing slightly below average range.  Mather played in 28 games (26 starts) in CF for the Cubs last year and he didn’t have any errors or assists there while showing outstanding range.

25-year old lefty swinging Domonic Brown, 29-year old righty swinging John Mayberry and 26-year old righty swinging Darin Ruf are going to compete for the starting LF job this spring.  Brown is the slight favorite here.  He played in 56 games for the Phillies last year and he was 44 of 187 (.235 avg, .712 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 5 homers and 26 RBIs.  Brown played in 29 games (13 starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he had 3 assists and 0 errors there while showing off outstanding range.  Brown has now played in 147 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 102 of 433 (.236 avg, .703 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 12 homers, 58 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  John Mayberry got his big shot to start last year and he dropped the ball.  He played in 149 games for the Phillies last year and he was 108 of 441 (.245 avg, .695 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 14 homers, 46 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 70 games (30 starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he had 2 assists and 1 error there while showing out of this world range.  Mayberry has now played in 303 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 197 of 777 (.254 avg, .760 OPS) with 102 runs scored, 35 homers, 109 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  26-year old righty swinging Darin Ruf might just have a chance here due to the thunder in his stick.  Ruf played in 12 games for the Phillies last year (in his first taste of the majors) and he was 11 of 33 (.333 avg, 1.079 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs.  He played in 6 games (all starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he didn’t have any assists or errors there while showing pretty awful range.  He is a natural 1B.  Ruf also played in 139 games in AA-ball for the Phillies last year in which he was 155 of 489 (.317 avg, 1.028 OPS) with 93 runs scored, 38 homers, 104 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  27-year old Delmon Young, 32-year old Laynce Nix and 30-year old righty swinging Joe Mather could play some in LF if needed in 2013.  Young played in 31 games (29 starts) in LF for the Tigers last year and he had 1 assist and 2 errors there while showing poor range.  Nix played in 18 games (6 starts) in LF last year for the Phillies and he had 0 errors or assists there while showing good range.  Mather played in 25 games (4 starts) in LF for the Cubs last year and he had 0 assists or errors there while showing outstanding range.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign 1B Austin Gallagher

The Phillies have signed 24-year old lefty swinging 1B Austin Gallagher to a minor league deal.  Gallagher will serve a 50-game suspension to open up the 2013 as he tested positive for a banned substance last month.  He played in 105 games in A-ball for the Dodgers last year and he was 106 of 374 (.283 avg, .864 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 15 homers, 74 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  He has now played in 520 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 547 of 1,916 (.285 avg, .790 OPS) with 270 runs scored, 46 homers, 302 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Gallagher will likely start his 2013 season in AA-ball for the Phillies.
