There is going to be competition in LF for the starting job this spring for the Philadelphia Phillies

25-year old lefty swinging Domonic Brown, 29-year old righty swinging John Mayberry and 26-year old righty swinging Darin Ruf are going to compete for the starting LF job this spring.  Brown is the slight favorite here.  He played in 56 games for the Phillies last year and he was 44 of 187 (.235 avg, .712 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 5 homers and 26 RBIs.  Brown played in 29 games (13 starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he had 3 assists and 0 errors there while showing off outstanding range.  Brown has now played in 147 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 102 of 433 (.236 avg, .703 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 12 homers, 58 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  John Mayberry got his big shot to start last year and he dropped the ball.  He played in 149 games for the Phillies last year and he was 108 of 441 (.245 avg, .695 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 14 homers, 46 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 70 games (30 starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he had 2 assists and 1 error there while showing out of this world range.  Mayberry has now played in 303 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 197 of 777 (.254 avg, .760 OPS) with 102 runs scored, 35 homers, 109 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  26-year old righty swinging Darin Ruf might just have a chance here due to the thunder in his stick.  Ruf played in 12 games for the Phillies last year (in his first taste of the majors) and he was 11 of 33 (.333 avg, 1.079 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs.  He played in 6 games (all starts) in LF for the Phillies last year and he didn’t have any assists or errors there while showing pretty awful range.  He is a natural 1B.  Ruf also played in 139 games in AA-ball for the Phillies last year in which he was 155 of 489 (.317 avg, 1.028 OPS) with 93 runs scored, 38 homers, 104 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  27-year old Delmon Young, 32-year old Laynce Nix and 30-year old righty swinging Joe Mather could play some in LF if needed in 2013.  Young played in 31 games (29 starts) in LF for the Tigers last year and he had 1 assist and 2 errors there while showing poor range.  Nix played in 18 games (6 starts) in LF last year for the Phillies and he had 0 errors or assists there while showing good range.  Mather played in 25 games (4 starts) in LF for the Cubs last year and he had 0 assists or errors there while showing outstanding range.
