The Philadelphia Phillies have a solid rotation set up again for 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by joelapinski on Tuesday 5 March 2013 at 12:20 pm

The Phillies are going to have one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball once again in 2013.  35-year old righty Roy Halladay was banged up last year, but he’s looking to make amends for that in 2013.  Halladay pitched in 25 games (all starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 11-8 with a 4.49 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 403 games (377 starts) in his first 15 years in the majors and he is 199-100 with 1 save, a 3.31 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  I look for Halladay to return to being a workhorse for the Phillies again in 2013.  34-year old lefty Cliff Lee is likely going to win a lot more games than he did last year for the Phillies.  Lee pitched in 30 games (all starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 6-9 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 284 games (280 starts) in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 125-78 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  29-year old lefty Cole Hamels is a rising force for the Phillies.  He pitched in 31 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 17-6 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.  Hamels has now pitched in 212 games (211 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 91-60 with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  28-year old righty Kyle Kendrick is going to be a full-time starter for the first time in 2013 for the Phillies.  He pitched in 37 games (25 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 11-12 with a 3.90 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Kendrick has now pitched in 164 games (123 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 54-42 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  28-year old lefty John Lannan, 25-year old righty Tyler Cloyd and 34-year old righty Aaron Cook are duking it out this spring for the #5 starter job in 2013.  Lannan is the favorite.  He pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Nationals last year and he was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.  Lannan has now pitched in 134 games (all starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  Cloyd comes into the season as the Phillies’ #21 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Phillies in his first taste of the majors last year and he was 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  He also pitched in 26 games (26 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies last year and he was 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.  Cook pitched in 18 games (all starts) for the Red Sox last year and he was 4-11 with a 5.65 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 256 games (224 starts) in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 76-79 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE STARTING ROTATION IN 2013:  A
