Antonio Bastardo is looking sharp for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by joelapinski on Wednesday 31 July 2013 at 1:20 pm

27-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo had a rough season in 2012, but he has bounced back big time so far in 2013.  Bastardo has pitched in 46 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-2 with 2 saves, a 2.45 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  He has given up 33 hits and 19 walks while whiffing 44 batters in his first 40 1/3 innings, which are very impressive numbers…..except for the walks.  Bastardo has now pitched in 206 games (5 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 15-11 with 11 saves, a 3.69 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Bastardo has worked well in tandem with Jonathan Papelbon at the end of games for the Phillies in 2013, and they hope they both keep up the good work.

The Philadelphia Phillies call up Cody Asche

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Tuesday 30 July 2013 at 2:45 pm

The Phillies have called up 23-year old lefty swinging 3B Cody Asche.  He came into this season as the Phillies’ #7 prospect according to Baseball America.  Asche played in 104 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 119 of 404 (.295 avg, .837 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 15 homers, 68 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.  He has now played in 302 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 333 of 1,161 (.287 avg, .780 OPS) with 139 runs scored, 29 homers, 159 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.   Asche will probably push Michael Young for playing time right away.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Steve Susdorf

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Tuesday 30 July 2013 at 2:42 pm

The Phillies have designated 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Steve Susdorf for assignment.  Susdorf played in 3 games for the Phillies this year and he was 1 for 7 (.143 avg, .429 OPS) with 1 run scored.  He also played in 70 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year in which he was 65 of 194 (.335 avg, .847 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 1 homer, 25 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  The Phillies hope Susdorf clears waivers so they can keep him and send him to AAA.

UPDATE:  (8/1/2013) - The Phillies have outrighted Steve Susdorf to AAA.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Carlos Zambrano

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 4:16 pm

The Phillies have released 32-year old righty starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano.  He pitched in 7 games (all starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 3-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  Zambrano has pitched in 354 games (302 starts) in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 132-91 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  The Phillies just didn’t think that Zambrano could help them this year, plain and simple.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Domonic Brown on the 7-day D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 4:12 pm

The Phillies have placed 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Domonic Brown on the 7-day disabled list due to a concussion.  Brown has played in 99 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 101 of 373 (.271 avg, .847 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 24 homers, 69 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Brown will be impossible to replace, so they hope he doesn’t miss much more than a week.  The Phillies have called up 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Steve Susdorf for his first shot at the show.  Susford played in 70 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies so far this year and he is 65 of 194 (.335 avg, .847 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 1 homer, 25 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.

Cole Hamels is turning things around in July for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 9:51 am

29-year old lefty starting pitcher Cole Hamels is getting his act back together so far in 2013.  He has pitched in 4 games (all starts) so far in July and he is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.  Hamels has now pitched in 21 games (all starts) overall this year and he is 4-12 with a 4.16 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.  Hamels has given up 131 hits and 36 walks while whiffing 123 batters in his first 134 innings this year, which are not bad numbers.  Look for Hamels to start piling up some wins if he keeps pitching like he has so far in July.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Humberto Quintero

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 9:48 am

The Phillies have designated 33-year old righty swinging catcher Humberto Quintero for assignment.  Quintero has played in 16 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 16 for 64 (.250 avg, .700 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 2 homers and 9 RBIs.  He has now played in 446 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 300 of 1,277 (.235 avg, .595 OPS) with 90 runs scored, 18 homers, 122 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Phillies hope that Quintero clears waivers and accepts an outright assignment to AAA, as they probably would like to keep him around as both Carlos Ruiz and Erik Kratz have missed time due to injury so far this year.

UPDATE:  (7/26/2013) - Humberto Quintero has cleared waivers, but he has elected to become a free agent.  He shouldn’t have much of a problem finding a new job.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Joe Savery on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Tuesday 23 July 2013 at 4:17 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed Joe Savery on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 14th, due to left elbow stiffness.  Savery has pitched in 10 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.  The Phillies have called up 35-year old lefty reliever Raul Valdes to replace Savery on the active roster.  Valdes pitched in 10 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Phillies and he was 1-0 with a 7.65 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.

Steve Susdorf is having a solid year in AAA-ball for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Monday 22 July 2013 at 6:45 am

27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Steve Susdorf is having a solid year in AAA-ball for the Phillies in 2013.  He has played in 68 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 64 of 188 (.340 avg, .864 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 1 homer, 24 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Susdorf has now played in 526 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 541 of 1,778 (.304 avg, .804 OPS) with 252 runs scored, 32 homers, 256 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.  Susdorf could get his first shot at the show at some point in 2013.

The Philadelphia Phillies could be buyers and sellers at the same time

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were the GM by joelapinski on Thursday 18 July 2013 at 1:59 pm

The Phillies could be buyers and sellers at the same time later this month.  They really could use an influx of relief help and they could also use a CF.  I could see the Phillies trying to deal Phillipe Aumont and Tyler Cloyd to the White Sox for Alejandro DeAza and Matt Lindstrom.  That would give them a solid leadoff hitter with some pop and a strong arm for the pen.  I could then see the Phillies swapping Michael Young to the Yankees for Joba Chamberlain.  Kevin Frandsen would take over for Young at 3B and Chamberlain would give them another big arm for the pen.  The Phillies might even deal Carlos Ruiz, as Erik Kratz has outplayed him so far this year.  The Rays would probably give them Jose Molina, Ryan Roberts and Cesar Ramos for him.  Buying and selling at the same time could result in the Phillies being a better team in the second half of the 2013 season.
