The Philadelphia Phillies place Peter Bourjos on the D.L.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed 29-year old righty swinging outfielder Peter Bourjos on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained right shoulder.  Bourjos has played in 93 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 71 of 281 (.253 avg, .674 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  To replace Bourjos on the active roster, the Phillies have activated 25-year old righty swinging outfielder Aaron Altherr off the 60-day D.L.  Altherr played in 13 games in Rookie+A+AA+AAA-ball on his rehab assignment this year and he was 14 of 41 (.341 avg, .944 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  He has played in 41 games in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 33 of 142 (.233 avg, .799 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 5 homers, 22 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Altherr is a guy the Phillies have high hopes for.

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated 25-year old lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf for assignment.  Stumpf pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP.  He gave up 9 hits (1 homer) and 2 walks while whiffing 2 batters in his 5 innings with the Phillies.  Stumpf will have to be offered back to the Kansas City Royals if he clears waivers, as the Phillies took him in the Rule 5 Draft last winter.

UPDATE:  (7/25/2016) – The Phillies have returned Daniel Stumpf to the Royals.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Edward Mujica

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 32-year old righty reliever Edward Mujica, at his request.  He was a little irritated that the Phillies continued to pass him up when they needed a reliever.  Mujica pitched in 36 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies and he was 0-3 with 23 saves, a 3.69 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.  Mujica has pitched in 494 games (4 starts) in his first 10 years in the show and he is 24-28 with 50 saves, a 3.85 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  He should have an easy time finding a new team.

The Philadelphia Phillies have sent 23-year old righty reliever/starter Severino Gonzalez to AAA.  Gonzalez has pitched in 11 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  He gave up 13 hits and 1 walk while whiffing 17 batters in his first 13 1/3 innings for the Phillies this year, so he was pitching really well for them.  Gonzalez has now pitched in 18 games (7 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.  He will likely get another shot with them later this year.  His spot on the active roster has been filled by rookie lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 25-year old lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf off the restricted list.  Stumpf pitched in 3 games (0 starts) earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 40.50 ERA and a 4.50 WHIP.  He gave up 1 hit (it was a homer) and he walked two batters in 2/3 innings earlier this year for the Phillies.  He has also pitched in 7 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies so far this year in which he is 1-0 with a 6.48 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  Daniel Stumpf was on the restricted list due to an 80 game suspension for testing positive for PEDs.  He was a Rule 5 pick over the winter away from the Kansas City Royals.

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated 27-year old lefty reliever Mario Hollands for assignment.  Hollands pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies last year and he was 0-o with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.  Holland pitched in 50 games (0 starts) for the Phillies in 2014 and he was 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  The Phillies needed Holland’s 40-man roster spot to activate 25-year old lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf off the restricted list.

UPDATE:  (7/14/2016) – The Phillies have outrighted Mario Hollands to AAA.

The Philadelphia Phillies have released Yoervis Medina

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 27-year old righty reliever Yoervis Medina.  Medina has not pitched at all this year after hurting his elbow in March.  Medina has pitched in 146 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 10-9 with 2 saves, a 3.08 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  He will likely hook on with another team, as long as his elbow is healthy.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 32-year old righty reliever Andrew Bailey off the D.L.  Bailey has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 3-0 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  To make room on the roster for Bailey, the Phillies have sent 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Adam Morgan to AAA.  Morgan has pitched in 14 games (12 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-7 with a 6.65 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.  Morgan has given up 90 hits (16 homers) and 16 walks while whiffing 56 batters in his first 66 1/3 innings pitched this year.  Morgan could get another chance with the Phillies later this year, but he’s going to have to pitch well in AAA-ball first.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vincent Velasquez off the D.L.  Velasquez has pitched in 12 games (all starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  He has given up 56 hits and 22 walks while whiffing 73 batters in his first 61 2/3 innings for the Phillies.  The Phillies will send 26-year old lefty Adam Morgan to the bullpen.  Morgan has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-6 with a 6.55 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.  The Phillies have sent 24-year old lefty reliever Elvis Araujo to AAA to make room on the roster for Velasquez.  Araujo has pitched in 27 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed 32-year old righty reliever Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 23rd, due to a strained left hamstring.  Bailey has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 3-0 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  He has given up 19 hits (4 homers) and 9 walks while whiffing 28 batters in his first 26 2/3 innings this year for the Phillies.  The Phillies have called up 23-year old righty reliever Edubray Ramos to replace Bailey in the pen.  Ramos came into this season as the Phillies’ #17 prospect according to Baseball America.  Ramos has pitched in 26 games in AA+AAA-ball so far this year for the Phillies and he is 2-1 with 10 saves, a 1.16 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP.  He has given up 24 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 41 batters in his first 38 2/3 innings in the minors this year.  Ramos has now pitched in 123 games (6 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 11-11 with 29 saves, a 2.75 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.
