Will Venable opts out of his minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies

33-year old lefty swinging outfielder Will Venable has opted out of his minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.  He played in 41 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 26 of 127 (.205 avg, .611 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers, 19 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Venable has played in 955 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 706 of 2,818 (.251 avg, .722 OPS) with 376 runs scored, 81 homers, 307 RBIs and 135 stolen bases.  Venable could be nearing the end of his career.

The Philadelphia Phillies call up Luis Garcia

The Philadelphia Phillies have called up 29-year old righty reliever Luis Garcia.  Garcia pitched in 1 game (0 starts) earlier this year for the Phillies and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  Garcia has also pitched in 21 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Phillies in which he is 3-1 with 1 save, a 2.77 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Garcia has now pitched in 110 games (0 starts) in his first four years with the Phillies and he is 6-7 with 2 saves, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies activate Mario Hollands off the D.L.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 27-year old lefty reliever Mario Hollands off the D.L.  Hollands had Tommy John surgery in April of 2015.  He has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball on his rehab assignment this year and he was 0-0 with a 1.46 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  His only Major League experience came back in 2014 for the Phillies, when he worked in 40 games (0 starts) in which he was 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies activate Cody Asche off the D.L.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 25-year old lefty swinging OF/3B Cody Asche off the D.L.  Asche played in 15 games in A+AA+AAA-ball on his rehab assignment this year and he was 10 for 59 (.169 avg, .629 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 4 homers and 8 RBIs.  He has played in 300 games in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 242 of 984 (.246 avg, .693 OPS) with 102 runs scored, 27 homers, 107 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  This is good news for the Phillies as they need outfield help and Asche should be able to give them a boost there.

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder David Lough for assignment.  Lough played in 30 games for the Phillies this year and he was 16 for 67 (.239 avg, .655 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He has now played in 342 games in his first five years in the show and he is 190 of 749 (.254 avg, .671 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 13 homers, 67 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

The Philadelphia Phillies have released Bobby LaFromboise

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 29-year old lefty reliever Bobby LaFromboise.  LaFromboise pitched in 13 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies and he was 1-3 with a 5.94 ERA and a 2.28 WHIP.  He has pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Emmanuel Burriss

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated 31-year old switch-hitting infielder Emmanuel Burriss for assignment.  Burriss played in 27 games for the Phillies this year and he was 4 for 33 (.121 avg, .407 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers, 0 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He has now played in 314 games in his first seven years in the show and he is 181 of 756 (.239 avg, .570 OPS) with 91 runs scored, 1 homer, 42 RBIs and 41 stolen bases.  The Phillies shouldn’t miss Burriss too much moving forward.

UPDATE:  (6/4/2016) – Burriss has accepted his outright assignment to AAA, so he will remain with the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire OF/3B Jimmy Paredes from the Blue Jays

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired 27-year old switch-hitting 3B/OF Jimmy Paredes from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations.  Paredes played in 7 games for the Blue Jays this year and he was 4 for 15 (.267 avg, .886 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs.  He has now played in 256 games in his first six years in the show and he is 208 of 808 (.257 avg, .667 OPS) with 91 runs scored, 16 homers, 83 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.  This was a good pickup for the Phillies, as Paredes has been a solid hitter so far in his career in the show.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Alfredo Marte

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Alfredo Marte.  Marte played in 12 games in AAA-ball for the Orioles and Phillies this year and he was 5 for 36 (.139 avg, .301 OPS) with 1 run scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  Marte has played in 71 games in his first three years in the show and he is 28 of 155 (.181 avg, .532 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers, 13 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Philadelphia Phillies release J.P. Arencibia

The Philadelphia Phillies have released 30-year old righty swinging catcher J.P. Arencibia at his request.  Arencibia played in 12 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 8 for 48 (.167 avg, .437 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs.  He has now played in 467 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 333 of 1,573 (.212 avg, .670 OPS) with 169 runs scored, 80 homers, 245 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  The Phillies won’t miss Arencibia moving forward.
