The Phillies have dealt 38-year old righty swinging infielder John McDonald to the Boston Red Sox for 24-year old righty reliever Nefi Ogando.  McDonald played in 21 games for the Phillies this year and he was 4 for 23 (.174 avg, .513 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  Ogando pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in A-ball for the Red Sox and he was 2-3 with 3 saves, a 4.09 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  Ogando has now pitched in 97 games (6 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 10-13 with 5 saves, a 3.45 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  This was a good deal for the Phillies as they got a nice relief prospect for a 38-year old backup infielder that can’t hit a lick.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Wednesday 21 August 2013 at 3:06 pm

The Phillies have signed 29-year old lefty swinging outfielder Roger Bernadina.  He played in 85 games for the Nationals earlier this year and he was 27 of 152 (.178 avg, .517 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Bernadina has now played in 468 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 287 of 1,182 (.243 avg, .670 OPS) with 146 runs scored, 25 homers, 107 RBIs and 56 stolen bases.  The Phillies aren’t very deep at outfield and Bernadina can play all three positions, so he could get some P.T. right away.

The Philadelphia Phillies have fired Charlie Manuel

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 16 August 2013 at 7:53 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies have fired 69-year old manager Charlie Manuel.  The Phillies were only 53-67 (44.2%) this year, which had them in 4th place in the N.L. East, 20.5 games behind the Braves.  They are also 15.5 games out of the last wildcard spot, owned by the Reds right now.  Manuel had a nice 9-year run as the Phillies’ manager.  He was 780-636 (55.1%) during the regular season and he was 27-19 (58.7%) in the playoffs for the Phillies.  Manuel led the Phillies to a World Series’ Championship in 2008 over the Tampa Bay Rays.  53-year old Ryne Sandberg will replace Manuel on an “interim” basis.  He was their 3B coach this year.  This will be Sandberg’s first shot to manage in the major leagues.  He was a minor league manager for the Cubs from 2007-2010 and he managed the Phillies’ AAA-team (Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs) in 2011.  Sandberg was elected into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 2005.  Sandberg began his major league playing career with the Phillies and now he will start his managing career for them.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Delmon Young

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 9 August 2013 at 1:38 pm

The Phillies have designated 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Delmon Young for assignment.  Young played in 80 games for the Phillies this year and he was 71 of 272 (.261 avg, .699 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 8 homers and 31 RBIs.  Young has now played in 960 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 1,026 of 3,630 (.283 avg, .739 OPS) with 418 runs scored, 97 homers, 513 RBIs and 34 stolen bases.  The Phillies are better off giving one of their younger players ABs, so I’m o.k. with this move.

UPDATE:  (8/14/2013) – Delmon Young has refused an outright assignment to AAA and he has become a free agent.

The Phillies have claimed 28-year old righty swinging outfielder Casper Wells off waivers from the White Sox.  Wells played in 41 games for the A’s and White Sox this year and he is 11 for 71 (.155 avg, .380 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  Wells has now played in 265 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 157 of 664 (.236 avg, .712 OPS) with 90 runs scored, 25 homers, 81 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  The Phillies hope that Wells can give them a little spark off the bench.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Laynce Nix

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Tuesday 6 August 2013 at 1:48 pm

The Phillies have designated 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Laynce Nix for assignment.  Nix played in 81 games for the Phillies this year and he was 23 of 128 (.180 avg, .486 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Nix played in 151 games in his two years with the Phillies and he was 51 of 242 (.211 avg, .601 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 5 homers and 23 RBIs.  Nix whiffed an amazing 86 times against only 20 walks for the Phillies as he was a hacker at the plate.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

UPDATE:  (8/13/2013) – The Phillies have released Laynce Nix.

Antonio Bastardo of the Philadelphia Phillies gets suspended for 50 games

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Monday 5 August 2013 at 12:31 pm

27-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo has been suspended for the next 50 games by Major League Baseball for his involvement with the Biogenesis Lab in Miami.  Bastardo pitched in 48 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 3-2 with 2 saves, a 2.32 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Bastardo has now pitched in 208 games (5 starts) in his first five years with the Phillies and he is 15-11 with 11 saves, a 3.65 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Bastardo has given up 146 hits and 91 walks while whiffing 243 batters in his first 195 innings in the majors, and with the exception of the walks….those are impressive numbers.  This is a HUGE blow to the Phillies’ pen for the rest of the 2013 season.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA J.C. Ramirez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 2 August 2013 at 1:47 pm

The Phillies have designated 24-year old righty reliever J.C. Ramirez for assignment.  Ramirez pitched in 11 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year in his first taste of the majors and he was 0-1 with a 7.43 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP.  He gave up 17 hits (3 homers) and walked 8 batters while whiffing 9 of them in his 13 1/3 innings with the Phillies, so he got hit hard and he was wild.  Ramirez also pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year for the Phillies and he was 3-2 with a 5.30 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP.  The Phillies needed Ramirez’ roster spot for 31-year old righty reliever/starter Zach Miner, who has been called up to the show.  He pitched in 27 games (12 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 5-6 with 2 saves, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  Miner last pitched in the majors in 2009 for the Tigers.  Miner has pitched in 157 games (35 starts) in his first 4 years in the show and he is 25-20 with 1 save, a 4.24 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Miner will initially work out of the pen for the Phillies.

UPDATE:  (8/4/2013) – The Phillies have outrighted J.C. Ramirez to AAA.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Steve Susdorf

The Phillies have designated 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Steve Susdorf for assignment.  Susdorf played in 3 games for the Phillies this year and he was 1 for 7 (.143 avg, .429 OPS) with 1 run scored.  He also played in 70 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year in which he was 65 of 194 (.335 avg, .847 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 1 homer, 25 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  The Phillies hope Susdorf clears waivers so they can keep him and send him to AAA.
