When the Philadelphia Phillies traded for 29-year old righty starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, they were expecting him to not only pitch well….but to serve as a good example for the younger starting pitchers on the team.  He is doing both things well right now.  Hellickson has pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 4-2 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.  He has given up 49 hits (9 homers) and 13 walks while whiffing 50 batters in his first 49 2/3 innings this year!  Hellickson has now pitched in 151 games (144 starts) in his first seven years in the show and he is 53-50 with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Tuesday 17 May 2016 at 8:26 am

21-year old lefty swinging outfielder Dylan Cozens came into this season as the Philadelphia Phillies‘ #16 prospect according to Baseball America.  Cozens has played in 36 games in A-ball so far this year and he is 39 of 136 (.287 avg, .949 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 10 homers, 26 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  Cozens has now played in 397 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 391 of 1,471 (.266 avg, .775 OPS) with 227 runs scored, 48 homers, 206 RBIs and 71 stolen bases.  With the way the Phillies’ outfielders are hitting right now, it wouldn’t be a shock to see them call up Cozens later on this year.

Freddy Galvis is playing pretty well for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Tuesday 17 May 2016 at 8:12 am

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 13 May 2016 at 11:13 am

The Philadelphia Phillies have called up 24-year old righty swinging 1B Tommy Joseph from AAA.  Joseph played in 27 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 33 of 95 (.347 avg, .981 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 6 homers and 17 RBIs.  He has now played in 500 games in his seven years in the minors and he is 467 of 1,869 (.255 avg, .733 OPS) with 211 runs scored, 69 homers, 292 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Joseph will move right into a platoon at 1B with Ryan Howard.  This could cost 29-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Darin Ruf his roster spot.  He has played in 31 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is only 9 of 57 (.158 avg, .399 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies are getting a lot of production out of Maikel Franco and Ryan Howard

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 12 May 2016 at 11:12 am

The Philadelphia Phillies are getting most of their power production out of 23-year old righty swinging 3B Maikel Franco and 36-year old lefty swinging 1B Ryan Howard so far this year.  Franco is the player the Phillies want to build their offense around for the now and the future.  He has played in 32 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 31 of 125 (.248 avg, .747 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 7 homers and 18 RBIs.  He has whiffed 26 times so far this year, so he doesn’t have nearly as many holes in his swing as most power hitters do.  Howard was projected to platoon with Darin Ruf, but he has played more than expected so far this year.  Howard has played in 33 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 18 of 99 (.182 avg, .678 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 8 homers and 16 RBIs.  Howard has already whiffed 37 times so far this year, but the Phillies will put up with it as long as he keeps hitting homers.  The Phillies are getting 20.4% of their runs scored, 55.6% of their homers and 34% of their RBIs from Franco and Howard so far in 2016.

David Hernandez could work his way back to the closer role soon

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by joelapinski on Friday 6 May 2016 at 7:24 am

30-year old righty reliever David Hernandez pitched horribly in his debut for the Philadelphia Phillies and he lost the closer job after one game.  He has now pitched in 13 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  He has given up 10 hits and 5 walks while whiffing 23 batters in his first 14 1/3 innings this year.  In his last 12 games, Hernandez is 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP.  Jeanmar Gomez has pitched pretty well at the Phillies’ closer, but Hernandez has much better stuff than him.  This will be something to watch going forward.
