The Philadelphia Phillies shut down Tommy Joseph

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, The Minors by joelapinski on Thursday 8 August 2013 at 12:24 pm

The Phillies have shut down 22-year old righty swinging C/1B Tommy Joseph for the rest of the 2013 season due to lingering concussion like symptoms.  Joseph played in 36 games in Rookie+A+AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 22 of 123 (.179 avg, .514 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 3 homers and 16 RBIs.  Joseph has now played in 388 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 368 of 1,477 (.249 avg, .717 OPS) with 176 runs scored, 52 homers, 227 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Joseph came into this season as the Phillies’ #3 overall prospect according to Baseball America, so it was smart of them to be safe with him and shut him down for 2013.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Laynce Nix

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Tuesday 6 August 2013 at 1:48 pm

The Phillies have designated 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Laynce Nix for assignment.  Nix played in 81 games for the Phillies this year and he was 23 of 128 (.180 avg, .486 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Nix played in 151 games in his two years with the Phillies and he was 51 of 242 (.211 avg, .601 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 5 homers and 23 RBIs.  Nix whiffed an amazing 86 times against only 20 walks for the Phillies as he was a hacker at the plate.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

UPDATE:  (8/13/2013) - The Phillies have released Laynce Nix.

Antonio Bastardo of the Philadelphia Phillies gets suspended for 50 games

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Monday 5 August 2013 at 12:31 pm

27-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo has been suspended for the next 50 games by Major League Baseball for his involvement with the Biogenesis Lab in Miami.  Bastardo pitched in 48 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 3-2 with 2 saves, a 2.32 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Bastardo has now pitched in 208 games (5 starts) in his first five years with the Phillies and he is 15-11 with 11 saves, a 3.65 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Bastardo has given up 146 hits and 91 walks while whiffing 243 batters in his first 195 innings in the majors, and with the exception of the walks….those are impressive numbers.  This is a HUGE blow to the Phillies’ pen for the rest of the 2013 season.

The Philadelphia Phillies need Carlos Ruiz to pick up the pace

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by joelapinski on Monday 5 August 2013 at 10:19 am

The Phillies need 34-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Ruiz to step up in the near future.  He started the year late due to a positive drug test and he just hasn’t look the same since returning to action.  Ruiz has played in 51 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 43 of 167 (.257 avg, .619 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 1 homer, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Ruiz better step up as he has been outplayed by 33-year old righty swinging Erik Kratz so far this year.  Kratz has played in 50 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 35 of 155 (.226 avg, .699 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 8 homers and 23 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA J.C. Ramirez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 2 August 2013 at 1:47 pm

The Phillies have designated 24-year old righty reliever J.C. Ramirez for assignment.  Ramirez pitched in 11 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year in his first taste of the majors and he was 0-1 with a 7.43 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP.  He gave up 17 hits (3 homers) and walked 8 batters while whiffing 9 of them in his 13 1/3 innings with the Phillies, so he got hit hard and he was wild.  Ramirez also pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year for the Phillies and he was 3-2 with a 5.30 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP.  The Phillies needed Ramirez’ roster spot for 31-year old righty reliever/starter Zach Miner, who has been called up to the show.  He pitched in 27 games (12 starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 5-6 with 2 saves, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  Miner last pitched in the majors in 2009 for the Tigers.  Miner has pitched in 157 games (35 starts) in his first 4 years in the show and he is 25-20 with 1 save, a 4.24 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Miner will initially work out of the pen for the Phillies.

UPDATE:  (8/4/2013) - The Phillies have outrighted J.C. Ramirez to AAA.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Jonathan Pettibone on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 2 August 2013 at 1:43 pm

The Phillies have placed 23-year old righty starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 29th, due to a strained right shoulder.  Pettibone has pitched in 18 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  The Phillies have called up 24-year old righty starting pitcher Ethan Martin to replace Pettibone in the starting rotation.  Martin came into this season as the Phillies’ #6 prospect according to Baseball America.  Martin pitched in 21 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 11-5 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  Martin gave up 94 hits and 67 walks while whiffing 107 batters in his first 115 2/3 innings this year, so he has good stuff but issues with his control.  Martin has now pitched in 137 games (101 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 48-40 with 3 saves, a 4.64 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  The Phillies hope that Martin is ready for the big time and that Pettibone only has to miss a couple of weeks.

Antonio Bastardo is looking sharp for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by joelapinski on Wednesday 31 July 2013 at 1:20 pm

27-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo had a rough season in 2012, but he has bounced back big time so far in 2013.  Bastardo has pitched in 46 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-2 with 2 saves, a 2.45 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  He has given up 33 hits and 19 walks while whiffing 44 batters in his first 40 1/3 innings, which are very impressive numbers…..except for the walks.  Bastardo has now pitched in 206 games (5 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 15-11 with 11 saves, a 3.69 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Bastardo has worked well in tandem with Jonathan Papelbon at the end of games for the Phillies in 2013, and they hope they both keep up the good work.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Tuesday 30 July 2013 at 2:45 pm

The Phillies have called up 23-year old lefty swinging 3B Cody Asche.  He came into this season as the Phillies’ #7 prospect according to Baseball America.  Asche played in 104 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 119 of 404 (.295 avg, .837 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 15 homers, 68 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.  He has now played in 302 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 333 of 1,161 (.287 avg, .780 OPS) with 139 runs scored, 29 homers, 159 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.   Asche will probably push Michael Young for playing time right away.

The Philadelphia Phillies DFA Steve Susdorf

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Tuesday 30 July 2013 at 2:42 pm

The Philadelphia Phillies release Carlos Zambrano

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 4:16 pm

The Phillies have released 32-year old righty starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano.  He pitched in 7 games (all starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 3-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  Zambrano has pitched in 354 games (302 starts) in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 132-91 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  The Phillies just didn’t think that Zambrano could help them this year, plain and simple.
