The back end of the starting rotation is looking good so far for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, Throwing Well by joelapinski on Wednesday 17 April 2013 at 12:33 pm

28-year old righty Kyle Kendrick (#4 starter) and 28-year old lefty John Lannan (#5 starter) are off to good starts in 2013 for the Phillies.  Kendrick has started 3 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  Lannan has started 2 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP.  If Kendrick and Lannan keep up the good work, the Phillies have to feel good about winning every night they play.  Because, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay are going to turn things around soon and Cliff Lee is off to an outstanding start.

UPDATE:  (4/18/2013) - The Phillies have placed John Lannan on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.  He had a rough night against the Reds last night.  He was the losing pitcher as he only lasted 1 2/3 innings in which he gave up 8 hits, 6 runs (all earned) while walking 1 batter and whiffing 1 batter.  Lannan has now started 3 games for the Phillies in 2013 and he is 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Lannan will likely miss the next 6-8 weeks.

Jesse Biddle is off to a good start in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Monday 15 April 2013 at 7:55 am

21-year old lefty starting pitcher Jesse Biddle came into this season as the Phillies’ #1 prospect.  Biddle has pitched in 2 games (both starts) in AA-ball so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP.  Biddle has now pitched in 65 games (64 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 22-16 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  The Phillies are likely going to put Biddle on the fast track to Philly in 2013.

Michael Young is off to a good start for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by joelapinski on Friday 12 April 2013 at 7:30 pm

34-year old righty swinging 3B Michael Young is off to a good start for the Phillies.  He has played in 9 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 12 of 32 (.375 avg, 1.053 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  It’s a good sign that Young is off to such a good start as he is coming off one of his worst years in the majors.  He played in 156 games for the Rangers last year and he was 169 of 611 (.277 avg, .682 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 8 homers, 67 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay are off to rocky starts in 2013 for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by joelapinski on Tuesday 9 April 2013 at 9:40 am

29-year old lefty starting pitcher Cole Hamels and 35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay are both getting pounded so far this year.  Hamels has pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-2 with a 10.97 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP.  He has given up 16 hits (4 homers), walked 5 batters and he has whiffed 7 batters in his first 10 2/3 innings and that’s pretty stinky.  It looks like a mechanical problem for Hamels, but the Phillies need to be very concerned with Halladay as his velocity is way down.  He has pitched in 2 games (both starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 0-2 with a 14.73 ERA and a 2.56 WHIP.  He has given up 12 hits (3 homers), walked 6 batters and he has whiffed 12 in his first 7 1/3 innings of 2013.  If the Phillies have any hopes of making a playoff run in 2013, they need to get Hamels and Halladay back on the right path soon.

It’s good to see Ryan Howard and Chase Utley healthy for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster, Playing Well by joelapinski on Friday 5 April 2013 at 10:41 am

The Phillies worked 33-year old lefty swinging 1B Ryan Howard and 34-year old lefty swinging 2B Chase Utley hard in spring training to get them ready for 2013.  That was smart as Howard (71 games) and Utley (83 games) didn’t play many games for them last year due to injury.  Howard is off to a slow start, as he has played in 3 games in which he is 1 for 12 (.083 avg, 237 OPS) with 1 RBI.  Utley has been much better so far this year, working in 3 games in which he is 5 for 11 (.455 avg, 1.462 OPS) with 2 runs scored, a double, a triple, a homer and 6 RBIs.  Howard and Utley’s health are a huge key for the Phillies in 2013.

The Phillies return outfielder Ender Inciarte to the Arizona Diamondbacks

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 5 April 2013 at 6:55 am

The Philadelphia Phillies have returned 22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Ender Inciarte (a Rule 5 Draft Pick) back to the Diamondbacks.  Inciarte played in 127 games in A-ball last year and he was 145 of 473 (.307 avg, .797 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 2 homers, 47 RBIs and 46 stolen bases.  He has now played in 456 games in his first five years in the minors with the D-Backs and he is 475 of 1,680 (.283 avg, .714 OPS) with 260 runs scored, 5 homers, 135 RBIs and 111 stolen bases.  The D-Backs are happy to get Inciarte back from the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies claim OF Ezequiel Carrera off waivers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Tuesday 2 April 2013 at 8:17 pm

The Phillies have claimed 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Ezequiel Carrera off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.  He played in 48 games for the Indians last year and he was 40 for 147 (.272 avg, .707 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Carrera has now played in 116 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 89 for 349 (.255 avg, .653 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 2 homers, 25 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  I really like this pickup for the Phillies as Carrera is a very fast player.

The Philadelphia Phillies release Austin Hyatt

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Friday 29 March 2013 at 7:04 am

The Phillies have released 26-year old righty starting pitcher Austin Hyatt.  Hyatt pitched in 27 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year for the Phillies and he was 10-12 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  He has pitched in 100 games (86 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 37-23 with 6 saves, a 3.79 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

The over/under for Philadelphia Phillies’ wins in 2013 is 81.5

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Sunday 24 March 2013 at 5:50 pm

The over/under for Phillies’ wins in 2013 is 81.5.  The Phillies were 81-81 (50%) in 2012.  The Phillies have Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay in the rotation and Jonathan Papelbon to close out games for 2013.  That is going to give them a very good shot to win three of every five night this year.  So far, so good as far as 1B Ryan Howard and 2B Chase Utley’s health looks.  If Howard and Utley can stay healthy in 2013, the Phillies will make another run at the playoffs.  I definitely like the over as far as Phillies’ wins go for 2013.
