The Phillies have placed 33-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list due to a case of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Ruiz has played in 95 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 105 of 313 (.335 avg, .959 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. 35-year old lefty swinging Brian Schneider and 32-year old righty swinging Erik Kratz will likely platoon behind the plate until Ruiz is ready to return to action. Schneider has played in 27 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 16 of 70 (.229 avg, .665 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. Kratz has played in 13 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 8 for 23 (.348 avg, 1.245 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 3 homers and 6 RBIs. This is another huge blow to the Phillies as Carlos Ruiz was having by far the best season of his major league career in 2012.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Placido Polanco on the D.L.

The Phillies have placed 36-year old righty swinging 3B Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list due to a case of back inflammation. Polanco has played in 82 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 74 of 290 (.255 avg, .628 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 2 homers and 19 RBIs. He has been especially awful so far this month. He has played in 14 games in July and he is 6 for 45 (.133 avg, .339 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. The Phillies have called up 30-year old righty swinging infielder Kevin Frandsen to replace Polanco on the active roster. Frandsen has played in 99 games in AAA-ball this year for the Phillies and he was 118 of 391 (.302 avg, .733 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 1 homer, 33 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Frandsen last played in the majors back in 2010 for the Angels. He has played in 228 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 138 of 568 (.243 avg, .636 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 7 homers, 53 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.

The Phillies have placed 34-year old lefty reliever Raul Valdes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 9th, due to a right hip strain. Valdes has pitched in 16 games (1 start) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. 26-year old Joe Savery will replace Valdes in the bullpen. Savery has pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he is 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.

The Phillies have placed 35-year old lefty swinging catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained ankle. Schneider has played in 26 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 16 for 69 (.232 avg, .656 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. 31-year old righty swinging Erik Kratz has been called up to replace Schneider as Carlos Ruiz’ backup. Kratz played in 5 games for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 1 for 4 (.250 avg, 1.250 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI. Kratz has now played in 16 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 7 for 44 (.159 avg, .446 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs.

UPDATE: (6/26/2012) – The Phillies will be without Brian Schneider for the next 3-5 weeks.

The Philadelphia Phillies lose David Herndon to Tommy John Surgery

The Phillies have lost 26-year old righty reliever David Herndon for the rest of the 2012 season and probably the first half of the 2013 season, as he had Tommy John Surgery earlier today. Herndon pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He has now pitched in 97 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 2-8 with 1 save, a 3.85 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed Freddy Galvis on the 15-day disabled list

The Phillies have placed 22-year old switch-hitting 2B Freddy Galvis on the 15-day disabled list due to a lower back strain. Galvis has played in 58 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 43 for 190 (.226 avg, .617 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 24 RBIs. Galvis has been hacking at the plate so far this year as he has walked only 7 times while whiffing 29 times already this year. 31-year old lefty swinging Mike Fontenot will likely replace him in the starting lineup. Fontenot has now played in 17 games for the Phillies this year and he is 12 for 29 (.414 avg, .948 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.

UPDATE: (6/19/2012) – Freddy Galvis has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for steroids. He can serve the suspension while he’s on the D.L., which is convenient. Galvis actually has a fracture in his lower back, so he will likely spend his whole suspension on the D.L.

The Philadelphia Phillies have lost 40-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras for the rest of the season due to a UCL and flexor tear in his right elbow. Contreras pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He likely has thrown his last pitch for the Phillies, as they are not expected to pick up his option for the 2013 season. Contreras pitched in 101 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Phillies and he is 7-4 with 9 saves, a 3.74 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 26-year old righty reliever Michael Schwimer to replace Contreras in the bullpen. Schwimer pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP. Schwimer has now pitched in 17 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. The Phillies have placed 35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained lat muscle, but he’s going to miss the next 6-8 weeks. Halladay has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He has now pitched in 76 games (all starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 44-21 with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. This is a huge blow to the Phillies as Halladay is going to be impossible to replace.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Vance Worley on the D.L.

The Phillies have placed 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vance Worley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12th due to right elbow inflammation. Worley has pitched in 7 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. 27-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick is going to replace Worley in the starting rotation. Kendrick has pitched in 8 games (3 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-3 with a 7.32 ERA and a 2.03 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Kendrick gets back to being the pitcher he was last season, when he was a huge asset for them.

The Phillies have placed 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Laynce Nix on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 10th, due to a strained right calf. Nix has played in 22 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 15 for 46 (.326 avg, .979 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. This is a big loss for the Phillies as Nix was giving them a lethal lefty bat off the bench. They hope he only misses a couple of weeks.
