The Philadelphia Phillies have lost 40-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras for the rest of the season due to a UCL and flexor tear in his right elbow. Contreras pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he was 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He likely has thrown his last pitch for the Phillies, as they are not expected to pick up his option for the 2013 season. Contreras pitched in 101 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Phillies and he is 7-4 with 9 saves, a 3.74 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 26-year old righty reliever Michael Schwimer to replace Contreras in the bullpen. Schwimer pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP. Schwimer has now pitched in 17 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Schwimer is better for them this time around.

The Phillies have placed 35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained lat muscle, but he’s going to miss the next 6-8 weeks. Halladay has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He has now pitched in 76 games (all starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 44-21 with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. This is a huge blow to the Phillies as Halladay is going to be impossible to replace.

The Phillies have placed 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vance Worley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12th due to right elbow inflammation. Worley has pitched in 7 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. 27-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick is going to replace Worley in the starting rotation. Kendrick has pitched in 8 games (3 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-3 with a 7.32 ERA and a 2.03 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Kendrick gets back to being the pitcher he was last season, when he was a huge asset for them.

The Phillies have placed 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Laynce Nix on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 10th, due to a strained right calf. Nix has played in 22 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 15 for 46 (.326 avg, .979 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. This is a big loss for the Phillies as Nix was giving them a lethal lefty bat off the bench. They hope he only misses a couple of weeks.

The Phillies have placed 41-year old lefty swinging 1B Jim Thome on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 29th due to a lower back strain. Thome has struggled at the plate so far this year. He has played in 12 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2 for 18 (.111 avg, .349 OPS) without any runs scored, homers or RBIs. Thome has whiffed 10 times already this year as he appears to be having a rough time adjusting to his new role coming off the bench. The Phillies have called up 31-year old righty swinging catcher Erik Kratz to replace Thome on the active roster. Kratz has played in 14 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 15 for 51 (.294 avg, .882 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 3 homers and 9 RBIs. Kratz has played in 11 games in parts of two years in the majors and he is 6 for 40 (.150 avg, .365 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Kratz will serve as the Phillies’ #3 catcher and a pinch hitter.

The Phillies have placed 26-year old righty reliever David Herndon on the 15-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation. Herndon has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Herndon has been quite a find for the Phillies since being picked in the 2009 Rule 5 Draft away from the Los Angeles Angels. Herndon has now pitched in 97 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Phillies and he is 2-8 with 1 save, a 3.85 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.

The Phillies have placed 25-year old righty reliever Michael Stutes on the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation. Stutes has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 6.35 ERA and a 1.94 WHIP. The Phillies have called up 26-year old righty reliever Michael Schwimer to replace Stutes in the bullpen. Schwimer has pitched in 7 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 1-0 with 2 saves, a 1.04 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He got his first taste of the majors last year with the Phillies when he appeared in 12 games (0 starts) in which he was 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Schwimer is better for them this time around.

UPDATE: (6/23/2012) – Michael Stutes is likely down for the year after he had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last Tuesday.

The Phillies have placed 33-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 19th due to a left oblique strain. Lee has started 3 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 1.96 ERA and a 0.70 WHIP. He has only given up 14 hits and 2 walks, while whiffing 18 batters in his first 23 innings this season. Lee will be replaced in the starting rotation by 27-year old righty Kyle Kendrick. Kendrick has pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. He should do a solid job filling in for Cliff Lee. That being said, the Phillies hope that Lee is ready to return to action soon.

The Phillies have placed 24-year old righty reliever Justin DeFratus on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26th due to a right elbow sprain. DeFratus pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 51 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year in which he was 6-3 with 15 saves, a 2.99 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The Phillies have high hopes for DeFratus, so they hope he gets well soon.

The Phillies have placed 33-year old lefty swinging 2B Chase Utley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26th due to deterioration of cartilage behind his left kneecap. Utley played in 103 games for the Phillies last year and he was 103 of 398 (.259 avg, .769 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 11 homers, 44 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,109 games in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 1,198 of 4,133 (.290 avg, .882 OPS) with 731 runs scored, 188 homers, 694 RBIs and 110 stolen bases. Rookie Freddy Galvis is going to get his big shot to start at 2B until Chase Utley is ready to return to action. It’s starting to look like Chase Utley’s best baseball is behind him already.
