The Philadelphia Phillies release outfielder Ronnie Weltz

The Phillies have released 25-year old righty swinging outfielder Ronnie Weltz.  Weltz played in 15 games in AA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 6 for 37 (.162 avg, .463 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Weltz has played in 534 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 536 of 1,906 (.281 avg, .820 OPS) with 293 runs scored, 68 homers, 310 RBIs and 49 stolen bases.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Phillies moving forward.

Alex Morgan is looking solid in AAA-ball for the Philadelphia Phillies

23-year old lefty starting pitcher Alex Morgan came into this season as the Phillies’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America and he’s getting a lot closer to making his major league debut in 2013.  He has started 5 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 1-2 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.  Morgan only have given up 24 hits and 9 walks while whiffing 20 batters in his first 30 2/3 innings in AAA-ball this year, which is impressive.  Morgan has now pitched in 43 games (42 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 12-16 with a 3.04 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.  If Morgan keeps pitching well in AAA, he will likely get a shot with the Phillies at some point in 2013.

Jesse Biddle is off to a good start in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies

21-year old lefty starting pitcher Jesse Biddle came into this season as the Phillies’ #1 prospect.  Biddle has pitched in 2 games (both starts) in AA-ball so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP.  Biddle has now pitched in 65 games (64 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 22-16 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  The Phillies are likely going to put Biddle on the fast track to Philly in 2013.

The Philadelphia Phillies have some rookies that could make a mark in 2013

The Phillies have as many as seven rookies that could make a mark for them at some point in 2013.  Here is a look at them:

Tommy Joseph:  21-year old righty swinging C/1B Tommy Joseph comes into this season as the Phillies’ #3 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 108 games in AA-ball for the Phillies and Giants last year and he was 104 of 404 (.257 avg, .715 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 11 homers and 48 RBIs.  Joseph has now played in 352 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 346 of 1,354 (.256 avg, .735 OPS) with 170 runs scored, 49 homers, 211 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

Jonathan Pettibone:  22-year old righty starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone comes into this year as the Phillies’ #4 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 26 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 13-8 with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Pettibone has now pitched in 87 games (85 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 33-30 with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.

Darin Ruf:  26-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Darin Ruf comes into this season as the Phillies’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America.  Ruf played in 139 games in AA-ball for the Phillies last year and he was 155 of 489 (.317 avg, 1.028 OPS) with 93 runs scored, 38 homers, 104 RBIs and 2 stolen base.  Ruf also played in 12 games for the Phillies in his first taste of the majors in 2012 and he was 11 for 33 (.333 avg, 1.079 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs.  Ruf has now played in 458 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 498 of 1,632 (.305 avg, .907 OPS) with 257 runs scored, 67 homers, 283 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.

Phillippe Aumont:  24-year old righty reliever Phillippe Aumont comes into this season as the Phillies’ #13 overall prospect according to Baseball America.  Aumont pitched in 41 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last year and he was 3-1 with 15 saves, a 4.26 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  He also pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in his first taste of the majors for the Phillies last year and he was 0-1 with 2 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  Aumont has now pitched in 170 games (29 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 14-27 with 41 saves, a 4.22 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

Cesar Hernandez:  22-year old switch-hitting 2B Cesar Hernandez comes into this season as the Phillies’ #15 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 133 games in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 155 of 532 (.291 avg, .733 OPS) with 63 runs scored, 2 homers, 57 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.  Hernandez has now played in 472 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 503 of 1,736 (.290 avg, .728 OPS) with 230 runs scored, 9 homers, 180 RBIs and 114 stolen bases.

Justin DeFratus:  25-year old righty reliever Justin DeFratus comes into this season as the Phillies’ #20 overall prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 13 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  He also pitched in 21 games (2 starts) in Rookie+A+AAA-ball last year in which he was 0-1 with 3 saves, a 2.10 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP.  DeFratus has now pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in his first two years for the Phillies and he is 1-0 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.

Tyler Cloyd:  25-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd comes into this season as the Phillies’ #21 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 26 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.  He also pitched in 6 games (all starts) in his first taste of the majors for the Phillies last year and he was 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  Cloyd has now pitched in 135 games (92 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 48-22 with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal Mike Cisco to the Angels

The Phillies have dealt 25-year old righty reliever Mike Cisco to the Angels for no compensation.  Cisco pitched in 40 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year for the Phillies and he was 5-3 with 3 saves, a 1.80 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  He pitched in 127 games (47 starts) in his five years in the minors for the Phillies and he was 29-22 with 6 saves, a 2.93 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.  The Phillies made this move for Cisco’s benefit, which is commendable.

Tyler Knigge has been outstanding in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012

23-year old righty reliever Tyler Knigge has been outstanding for the Phillies in the minors so far this year. Knigge has pitched in 52 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball so far this year and he is 4-1 with 11 saves, a 1.52 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He has only given up 48 hits and 23 walks in 65 1/3 innings in the minors while whiffing 65 batters in the minors, which is impressive. Knigge has now pitched in 106 games (4 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 8-8 with 15 saves, a 2.96 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. He might get his first shot at the majors in September when rosters expand.

The Philadelphia Phillies deal catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to the Blue Jays

The Phillies have dealt 28-year old righty swinging catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to the Blue Jays for cash considerations. Gosewisch played in 65 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he is 41 of 213 (.192 avg, .551 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 4 homers and 20 RBIs. He played in 646 games in his first eight years in the minors for the Phillies and he was 502 of 2,165 (.232 avg, .659 OPS) with 255 runs scored, 44 homers, 262 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. This is no loss for the Phillies going forward.

The Philadelphia Phillies call up Domonic Brown

The Philadelphia Phillies have called up 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Domonic Brown. He will likely replace Shane Victorino as the starting CF, starting tonight. Brown played in 65 games in Rookie+AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 74 of 239 (.310 avg, .833 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 5 homers, 32 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Brown has played in 91 games in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 58 of 246 (.236 avg, .696 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 7 homers, 32 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. The Phillies need to let Brown start the next two months and see if he is going to be a big part of the future for them or not.

Lisalverto Bonilla is looking sharp in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies

22-year old righty reliever Lisalverto Bonilla came into this season as the Phillies’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America. Bonilla has pitched in 31 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball so far this year and he is 3-2 with 4 saves, a 1.55 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He has only given up 31 hits while whiffing 64 batters in his first 46 1/3 innings this year….which is pretty darn impressive. Bonilla has now pitched in 84 games (35 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 16-13 with 8 saves, a 2.50 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.

Tyler Cloyd has been really impressive in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies this year

25-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd has pitched in 14 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball so far this year and he is 10-1 with a 2.21 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. He has now pitched in 123 games (80 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 43-22 with a 3.40 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Cloyd could get his first shot at the show in 2012 with the Phillies if the need arises for another starting pitcher in the near future.
