The Philadelphia Phillies release Dave Bush

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 6 June 2012 at 12:37 pm

The Phillies have released 32-year old righty starting pitcher Dave Bush (he technically opted out of his minor league deal to sign with a team in Korea). Bush pitched in 11 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 4-3 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He has pitched in 210 games (187 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 56-69 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Bush lost his patience with the Phillies, but he likely would have gotten a shot at some point in 2012 with them.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 2 June 2012 at 4:38 pm

23-year old switch-hitting outfielder Jiwan James came into this season as the Phillies’ #9 prospect according to Baseball America. He has now played in 349 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 363 for 1,364 (.266 avg, .689 OPS) with 195 runs scored, 14 homers, 135 RBIs and 74 stolen bases. The Phillies are going to likely take things slowly with James as he has converted to the outfielder after injuring his elbow as a pitcher early on in his minor league career.

Trevor May is off to a blazing start in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 4 May 2012 at 9:57 am

22-year old righty starting pitcher Trevor May came into this season as the Phillies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America. May is dominating in AA-ball so far this year for the Phillies. He has started 5 games in AA-ball so far this year for the Phillies and he is 5-0 with a 2.40 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. He has only given up 21 hits in his first 30 innings this year, while whiffing 33 batters and only walking 8. His control is vastly improved this year as the coaches at AA-ball have May attacking the strike zone and the results have been outstanding so far. May has pitched in 79 games (74 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 32-18 with a 3.46 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. The Phillies are going to let May advance on his own timetable, as they have no need to rush him to the show.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 23 April 2012 at 12:43 pm

The Phillies have released 32-year old lefty swinging 2B Joe Thurston. Thurston played in 11 games in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 6 for 29 (.207 avg, .723 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He did show a good eye as he walked 7 times while only whiffing 4 times in AAA for the Phillies. The handwriting was on the wall for Thurston when the Phillies signed infielder Mike Fontenot. The Phillies won’t miss Thurston too much going forward.

Phillippe Aumont is pitching really well in AAA for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 April 2012 at 4:45 pm

23-year old righty reliever Phillippe Aumont came into this season as the Phillies’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. He has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 0-0 with 4 saves, a 1.50 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP. Aumont has only give up 2 hits and 2 walks while whiffing 9 batters in his first six innings pitched as he has been downright nasty. He has now pitched in 134 games (29 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 11-26 with 30 saves, a 4.15 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. If Aumont keeps pitching like he is right now, the Phillies are going to give him a shot at some point in 2012.

The Philadelphia Phillies have five rookies that could help them in 2012

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 5 April 2012 at 12:30 pm

The Phillies have five rookies that could help them at some point in 2012. Here is a look at them:

Freddy Galvis: 22-year old switch-hitting 2B Freddy Galvis comes into this season as the Phillies’ #6 prospect according to Baseball America. He played in 137 games in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 151 of 543 (.278 avg, .716 OPS) with 78 runs scored, 8 homers, 43 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He has now played in 526 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 488 of 1,987 (.246 avg, .613 OPS) with 256 runs scored, 18 homers, 160 RBIs and 68 stolen bases. Galvis will be counted on to fill in for Chase Utley until he’s ready to return to action and those are some huge shoes to have to fill.

Phillippe Aumont: 23-year old righty reliever Phillippe Aumont comes into this season as the Phillies’ #5 prospect according to Baseball America. Aumont pitched in 43 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year in which he was 2-5 with 7 saves, a 2.68 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. He has now pitched in 129 games (29 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 11-26 with 26 saves, a 4.21 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Aumont seemed to really start to get it last year, so he could help the Phillies in the pen at some point in 2012.

Justin DeFratus: 24-year old righty reliever Justin DeFratus comes into this season according to Baseball America. He pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 51 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 6-3 with 15 saves, a 2.99 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. DeFratus has now pitched in 160 games (34 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 22-17 with 39 saves, a 3.18 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. DeFratus is going to start the 2012 season on the D.L., but he should be able to help the Phillies later in the year.

Joe Savery: 26-year old lefty reliever Joe Savery comes into this season as the Phillies’ #25 prospect according to Baseball America. He pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.38 WHIP. Savery also pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 5-0 with 2 saves, a 1.50 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. He has now pitched in 115 games (77 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 33-31 with 2 saves, a 4.08 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Savery will work out of the bullpen for the Phillies in 2012, as he looked pretty solid in his first full season as reliever last year in the minors.

Michael Schwimer: 26-year old righty reliever Michael Schwimer comes into this season as the Phillies’ #30 prospect according to Baseball America. He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. He also pitched in 47 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last year and he was 9-1 with 10 saves, a 1.85 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Schwimer has now pitched in 170 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 20-10 with 49 saves, a 2.50 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. The Phillies hope that Schwimer can help them out of the pen at some point in 2012.
