34-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee has been excellent for the Phillies once again in 2013.  He has pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-2 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.  Lee has given up 61 hits and 13 walks while whiffing 55 batters in his first 72 2/3 innings, which are impressive numbers.  He almost has as many wins as he had in 30 starts last year (6), when he didn’t get much help from the offense or bullpen.  Lee has now pitched in 84 games (all starts) in his first four years with the Phillies and he is 35-23 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.  Lee is now the unquestioned ace of the Phillies’ starting rotation.

Kyle Kendrick has been the ace of the Philadelphia Phillies’ starting rotation so far in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by joelapinski on Friday 10 May 2013 at 8:57 am

With Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay in the starting rotation, it would be absurd to think of 28-year old righty Kyle Kendick as the ace of the rotation…..but he has been so far in 2013.  Kendrick has started 7 games for the Phillies so far in 2013 and he is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.  He has only given up 42 hits and 10 walks while whiffing 35 batters in his first 47 2/3 innings for the Phillies so far this year and those are some pretty darn impressive numbers.  Kendrick has now pitched in 171 games (130 starts) in his first seven years with the Phillies and he is 58-43 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Kendrick is making the most of his first season with a full-time spot in the starting rotation, so the Phillies hope that he keeps up the good work.

22-year old righty starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone is off to a good start to his major league career.  He has started 3 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  He has given up 18 hits and walked 2 batters while whiffing 13 in his first 16 2/3 innings so far this year.  He came into this season as the Phillies’ #4 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 89 games (87 starts) in his five years in the minors for the Phillies and he was 33-31 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Pettibone will have a good chance of keeping his starting role for a while if he keeps pitching well as #5 starter John Lannan isn’t going to be ready to return any time soon.

The back end of the starting rotation is looking good so far for the Philadelphia Phillies

28-year old righty Kyle Kendrick (#4 starter) and 28-year old lefty John Lannan (#5 starter) are off to good starts in 2013 for the Phillies.  Kendrick has started 3 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  Lannan has started 2 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP.  If Kendrick and Lannan keep up the good work, the Phillies have to feel good about winning every night they play.  Because, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay are going to turn things around soon and Cliff Lee is off to an outstanding start.

UPDATE:  (4/18/2013) – The Phillies have placed John Lannan on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.  He had a rough night against the Reds last night.  He was the losing pitcher as he only lasted 1 2/3 innings in which he gave up 8 hits, 6 runs (all earned) while walking 1 batter and whiffing 1 batter.  Lannan has now started 3 games for the Phillies in 2013 and he is 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Lannan will likely miss the next 6-8 weeks.

35-year old lefty swinging outfielder Juan Pierre couldn’t find a job last winter and he decided to sign a minor league deal with the Phillies. He earned the starting job in LF and he has not looked back. Pierre has played in 125 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 120 of 383 (.313 avg, .735 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 1 homer, 25 RBIs and 35 stolen bases. He has been red hot in September, helping the Phillies make a late Wild Card run. Pierre has played in 15 games so far in September and he is 20 for 49 (.408 avg, .943 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Roy Halladay has looked like his old self for the Philadelphia Phillies in August

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 30 August 2012 at 9:32 am

35-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay has been rock solid so far in August for the Phillies. Halladay has started 5 games so far in August and he is 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He has only given up 28 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 29 batters in his 36 innings this month for the Phillies. Halladay has now pitched in 19 games (all starts) for the Phillies overall this year and he is 8-7 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Cliff Lee has gotten little luck this year for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2012 at 9:43 am

33-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee hasn’t been getting much help from his teammates this year. He has started 22 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-7 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He has given up 156 hits (22 homers) and walked 25 batters in his first 154 2/3 innings for the Phillies this year while whiffing 151 batters. Lee has now pitched in 66 games (all starts) for the Phillies in his three years with the team and he is 26-19 with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. It’s amazing to me that Lee only has 2 wins this year based on how well he has pitched.
