Antonio Bastardo has been a lifesaver in the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 4 July 2011 at 1:33 pm

With Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson and Jose Contreras on the D.L., the Phillies have turned to 25-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo to close and he’s off to a good start in his new role. Bastardo has pitched in 33 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 3-0 with 4 saves, a 0.90 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP. He has only given up 11 hits in his first 30 innings this year while he has whiffed 34 batters which shows just how nasty he has been this year. Bastardo has really grown up as a pitcher as his first two years were kind of rough. In Bastardo’s first two years with the Phillies, he worked in 31 games (0 starts) in which he was 4-3 with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. The Phillies need Bastardo to stay on his game as he has been electric for them so far this year.

Cliff Lee is on fire with the Philadelphia Phillies so far in June

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 June 2011 at 11:21 am

32-year old lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee has been on fire for the Phillies so far this month. Lee has started 3 games for the Phillies so far in June and he is 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. Lee has only allowed 13 hits in his first 24 innings this month. Lee has now started 15 games for the Phillies so far this year and he is 7-5 with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Lee has already walked 24 batters this year in 104 innings, which is 6 more batters than he walked in all of 2010 in 212 1/3 innings) but his control has still be excellent. Lee has also whiffed 111 batters in 104 innings as he is turning into a strikeout pitcher.

Cliff Lee’s record isn’t indicitive of how well he’s pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Sunday 5 June 2011 at 3:59 pm

Lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee’s record is only 4-5 this year, but he hasn’t pitched too bad. He has pitched in 12 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he has a 3.94 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Lee has given up 82 hits in his first 80 innings so far this year, but he has also whiffed 90 batters while only walking 19 of them. You have to think that Lee is going to start getting a lot of wins soon if he keeps pitching like he is so far this year.

Cole Hamels is really pitching well so far this year for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 20 May 2011 at 4:12 pm

27-year old lefty starting pitcher Cole Hamels has been outstanding so far this year for the Phillies. He has pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-2 with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He has only given up 49 hits and walked 13 batters in his first 61 2/3 innings this year while whiffing 64 batters. He has been the Phillies’ second best starting pitcher behind Roy Halladay so far this year. He will likely set new career highs in both wins (15) and strikeouts (211) in 2011 if he can just stay healthy.

Roy Halladay continues to dominate for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 9 May 2011 at 3:47 pm

33-year old righty starting pitcher Roy Halladay is still the unquestioned ace of the staff for the Phillies. Halladay has pitched in 7 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 5-1 with a 2.19 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He has only given up 45 hits in 53 1/3 innings so far this year. Halladay has already whiffed 57 batters while only walking 7, which is amazing! Halladay has now pitched in 40 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 26-11 with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. With the way Halladay is pitching right now he might win the Cy Young Award in the N.L. once again this year.

Antonio Bastardo has been downright nasty this year for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 29 April 2011 at 8:19 pm

25-year old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo came into this season as the Phillies’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America and he’s showing why so far this year. Bastardo has pitched in 10 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-0 with 1 save, a 0.87 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. He only has given up 4 hits in his first 10 1/3 innings this year while whiffing 16 batters as he has been electric so far this year. The Phillies hope that Bastardo keeps up the good work as he could team with J.C. Romero (when he comes off the D.L.) to give them a nice pair of lefties in the pen.

Ryan Madson is looking good this year for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 21 April 2011 at 10:56 am

Righty set-up man Ryan Madson is off to a solid start for the Phillies in 2011. Madson has pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has only given up 5 hits while walking 2 batters in his first 7 innings this year. Madson has also whiffed 9 batters as he is doing an outstanding job of setting up for Jose Contreras. The Phillies need Madson to keep up the good work because they can’t afford to be giving up leads late in games.

Jose Contreras is off to a good start for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 11 April 2011 at 2:25 pm

When Brad Lidge went down to injury at the end of spring training, the Phillies weren’t sure of who to turn to as the closer. Ryan Madson seemed much more comfortable as a set-up man than as a closer last year. That led to the Phillies deciding to give 39-year old righty Jose Contreras a chance to close. Contreras only had 4 saves in his career (all coming last season with the Phillies) coming into this year. But, he has been outstanding so far this year for the Phillies. Contreras has pitched in 3 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 0-0 with 2 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Contreras has 4 whiffs in only 3 innings so far this year as his stuff plays much better as a late inning reliever as it did when he was a starting pitcher. The Phillies need Contreras to keep up the good work because Lidge is going to be out until at least the All-Star Game.

The top three starters for the Philadelphia Phillies get off to good starts

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 4 April 2011 at 4:39 pm

Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt lived up to their advanced billing with solid first starts for the Phillies. They combined to go 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP for the Phillies over the weekend. The trio was downright nasty as they only gave up 14 hits in 19 innings over the weekend while whiffing 23 batters and only walking 1! The Phillies’ starting pitchers come right at hitters and they have great stuff. I think the rest of the N.L. is in deep trouble because of the quality and quantity of the Phillies’ starting rotation as Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton are also really solid pitchers.

Ryan Madson has really been awesome for the Philadelphia Phillies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 16 September 2010 at 10:11 am

29-year old righty reliever Ryan Madson started this season as the closer as Brad Lidge had a late start to the year. But he was injured after blowing a game and it kept him out of action for quite a while. Upon his return though, he has really dominated giving the Phillies a reliable set-up man to Brad Lidge. Madson has pitched in 48 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 5-2 with 5 saves, a 2.47 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. He has only given up 37 hits in 47 1/3 innings while whiffing 59 batters showing how dominant his stuff is. He also has razor sharp control this year as he has only walked 10 batters. Madson will likely be the Phillies’ closer at some point again down the road as long as he keeps his head on straight.
