The Philadelphia Phillies are 40-47 on the season, which has them in 4th place in the N.L. East, 11 games behind the Nationals. They are also 7.5 games behind the Dodgers for the second wild card spot. The Phillies have played much better than expected so far this year, so if I were in charge, I wouldn’t dismantle the whole thing like they did last year. I think the Peter Bourjos, Andres Blanco, Jeremy Hellickson and David Hernandez would be the players I would move at the trade deadline. No need to rush to make a deal, as there is still 23 days to go before the non-waiver trade deadline. Hellickson is the best trade chip the Phillies have, as starting pitching is pretty scarce on the trade market right now. The Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Royals, White Sox, Rangers, Mariners, Mets, Marlins, Pirates and Dodgers will all be interested in him. The Marlins just traded a very legit prospect to the Padres for Fernando Rodney, so they would likely be the first team I called. Righty reliever David Hernandez should appeal to teams like the Tigers, Mariners and Cardinals….who all are in need of righty relief help. Outfielder Peter Bourjos would be a backup outfielder on a good team, but he is hot with the bat right now. There would be no better time to trade him than right now. The Blue Jays, White Sox, Astros and Nationals would all likely have a lot of interest in him right now. Andres Blanco will would only bring back a minor return in a deal by himself, but he could be a sweetener added to a deal involving Hellickson, Hernandez or Bourjos. The Red Sox, White Sox, Astros and Nationals would likely have some interest in him. Finally, I would give catcher Carlos Ruiz and 1B Ryan Howard until the end of the month to start hitting, as likely have no interest in the trade market. If they continue to struggle with the bat, I release them both on August 1st.
The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 32-year old righty reliever Andrew Bailey off the D.L. Bailey has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 3-0 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. To make room on the roster for Bailey, the Phillies have sent 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Adam Morgan to AAA. Morgan has pitched in 14 games (12 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-7 with a 6.65 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Morgan has given up 90 hits (16 homers) and 16 walks while whiffing 56 batters in his first 66 1/3 innings pitched this year. Morgan could get another chance with the Phillies later this year, but he’s going to have to pitch well in AAA-ball first.
29-year old righty swinging outfielder Peter Bourjos has caught fire with the bat lately for the Philadelphia Phillies. In his last 22 games, Bourjos is 28 of 65 (.431 avg, 1.133 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Bourjos has now played in 74 games for the Phillies overall this year and he is 56 of 210 (.267 avg, .703 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 4 stolen base. When Bourjos is hitting like he is right now, he becomes very valuable, as he is already a good defensive player who has a lot of speed.
24-year old righty starting pitcher Mark Appel is done for the season for the Philadelphia Phillies. He recently had surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone spur. Appel pitched in 8 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Phillies this year and he was 3-3 with a 4.46 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. Appel has now pitched in 62 games (61 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 19-14 with a 5.04 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Appel was part of the return from the Houston Astros in the Ken Giles deal last winter.
The Philadelphia Phillies have activated 24-year old righty starting pitcher Vincent Velasquez off the D.L. Velasquez has pitched in 12 games (all starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He has given up 56 hits and 22 walks while whiffing 73 batters in his first 61 2/3 innings for the Phillies. The Phillies will send 26-year old lefty Adam Morgan to the bullpen. Morgan has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-6 with a 6.55 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. The Phillies have sent 24-year old lefty reliever Elvis Araujo to AAA to make room on the roster for Velasquez. Araujo has pitched in 27 games (0 starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP.
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed 32-year old righty reliever Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 23rd, due to a strained left hamstring. Bailey has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Phillies and he is 3-0 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He has given up 19 hits (4 homers) and 9 walks while whiffing 28 batters in his first 26 2/3 innings this year for the Phillies. The Phillies have called up 23-year old righty reliever Edubray Ramos to replace Bailey in the pen. Ramos came into this season as the Phillies’ #17 prospect according to Baseball America. Ramos has pitched in 26 games in AA+AAA-ball so far this year for the Phillies and he is 2-1 with 10 saves, a 1.16 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP. He has given up 24 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 41 batters in his first 38 2/3 innings in the minors this year. Ramos has now pitched in 123 games (6 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 11-11 with 29 saves, a 2.75 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.
26-year old lefty starting pitcher Adam Morgan of the Philadelphia Phillies is getting hit really hard so far this year. He has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Phillies so far this year and he is 1-6 with a 6.55 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. He has given up 78 hits (12 homers) and 14 walks while whiffing 48 batters in his first 57 2/3 innings so far this year. Morgan has now pitched in 26 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 6-13 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. It might be time to give another pitcher a shot in the starting rotation, as Morgan has been getting drilled so far this year.
The Philadelphia Phillies have claimed 27-year old righty reliever Phil Klein off waivers from the Texas Rangers. Klein pitched in 8 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Klein has now pitched in 36 games (2 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 2-3 with a 4.80 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Klein will start out in AAA-ball for the Phillies, but I think he will get to the show at some point in 2016.
The Philadelphia Phillies have called up 23-year old righty reliever Severino Gonzalez. Gonzalez pitched in 19 games (1 start) in AA+AAA-ball this year and he was 2-1 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He got his first taste of the show last year with the Phillies and it didn’t go too well at all. Gonzalez pitched in 7 games (all starts) for the Phillies last year and he was 3-3 with a 7.92 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He gave up 44 hits (5 homers) and 7 walks while whiffing 28 batters in his 30 2/3 innings last year. The Phillies hope that Gonzalez is better this time around for them.
The Philadelphia Phillies have sent 26-year old righty reliever Colton Murray to AAA. Murray has pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Phillies this year and he is 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Murray has now pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Phillies and he is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Murray will likely get another shot with the Phillies later on in 2016.
